Circulate the tales of Salʿ and al-Ḥimā—circulate them.

And dwell on the memory of al-Liwā or its fragrant bān trees.

Recall the blowing of the breeze at the bend before dawn,

when you pass over the flowers and pools.

    لعلَّ بالجزعِ أعواناً على السهرِ

    Speak of al-Jizʿ, and mention me to its inhabitant;

perhaps at al-Jizʿ there are helpers in sleeplessness.

Describe Qubāʾ's gardens, and conclude with Ṭaybah whatever

you recount to me by night: it is my sweetest night-talk.

Dwellings clothed in honor through the Chosen One,

through the best of creation, among nomads and townsfolk.

When he smiles at night, say to his smiling mouth:

O wakeful lightning, awaken the sleeping acacias.

    فاسقي المواطرَ حياً من بني مضرِ

    And O clouds, his bounty has made you needless;

so, rain-bearing clouds, water a clan of Banū Muḍar.

What have his enemies to do with knowledge? For it is folly

to put jewelry on someone incapable of seeing.

He ascended, with Gabriel his attendant on the Ascension,

saying to the Muḍarite in the language of circumstance:

Never have I traveled without a vision of you accompanying me,

by night ahead of me, and by day in my wake.

If the one lifting my saddle set it above the star,

I would find a vision of you there awaiting me.

The Corner gained honor when you kissed its Black Stone,

and to it was added the blackness of heart and eye.

You were a sweet draught, never shunned for coldness,

though sweet water is shunned when its cold is excessive.

O mission ever renewed among us,

why not now, while we stand at ten of the ten?

Humankind and jinn, O fairest of all creatures, both came

begging you for graceful charm and dark-eyed beauty.

You spared no counsel for souls that denied and rebelled,

yet you gave freely of pearls they denied.

O you whose goodness embraces the world and its dwellers,

nothing is bare of a beautiful adornment from you.

At Dhāt al-Ḍāl you left no unadorned gazelle,

    nor any naked wild ox.

When you interceded, the gazelle escaped,

and you won the thanks of white and tawny gazelles.

Many a young wild calf among them trailed brocade,

though it had once strutted in a garment of fur.

You beautified the arrangement of words in which you were praised,

and a dwelling filled with modesty through your presence.

Beauty's luster appears in two things:

a line of poetry or a tent of hair.

I undertook praise of God's Messenger, rejoicing,

and the birds marvel at me: how have I not flown?

My two eyes, from longing toward his chamber,

are like two spear-shafts from exhaustion and wasting.

I have sins; whenever I recall their past,

I seem to stand on a gazelle's horn in dread.

My hope is that, for all their snares, they involve no idolatry,

for that is a sin not forgiven.

The Generous One surely erases every misdeed

in clarity, and conceals it amid murk.

I have a heart which, whenever any but Muḍar boasts,

is a stout she-camel's heart, like a wary bird.

By God, were all the people of the earth

like al-Fuṣayṣī, glory would belong to Muḍar.

O soul, do not despair of triumph at the Return, for I have

one whom you know, who will make me content with destiny:

the slayer of drought, when the sky appears to us

    as though clad in wrappings of drought's gore;

the distributor of bounty to high and low,

as rain divides itself between low-growing plants and trees.

Where is my poetry beside the Guide, of whom

miraculous verses and surahs descended in description?

And whoever saw him, possessing reason, believes him,

like a sword whose markings attest its power.

So let no cheerfulness appearing in another deceive you,

even if it shines: how many blossoms bear no fruit!

O master, through whom the Friend's fire was rebuked,

as Arabs know the driving back of sheep and camel herds.

Earth's treasures came to you, followed by

their thousands, and thousands of coats of mail and money-purses.

Yet their adornment neither puffed you up nor deceived you,

and you lived like a traveler hurrying onward, taking little.

Nor did it make your illustrious, noble family proud, nor

did its demands gain anything from your steadfast companions.

They were the beauty of this earth in life, and they are,

after death, the beauty of books and biographies.

You are alive in the grave; no decay has touched you,

and the full moon in early night is like the full moon before dawn.

O you who suckled among Banū Saʿīd, who are Arabs

who do not dwell in towns—for honor is lost in settled life.

When the rain pours, their slaves kindle it,

in boasting among the Arabs, like white forehead blazes.

O you whose maternal uncles are Banū Zuhrah, and they are,

in boasting among the Arabs, like white forehead blazes.

Who will grant me a kiss on the ground you trod, instead

of kissing a cheek or a mouth with finely serrated teeth?

Had I not revered you, my master, I would have said: a youth

well-proportioned in form, between the sun and the moon.

How many a man the Chosen, Elect One informed

from heaven of the reversals he would encounter!

No—none like him mounted al-Burāq's back and rose,

devouring the course like a skillful, wheeling charger.

How then compare with it the steeds trained

by Banū al-Fuṣayṣ to meet spears at frontier posts?

A chaste woman bore his two grandsons, who resembled each other

before her, as bright swords resemble pools.

How fine my words to ʿAbd Allāh, his father—

words that came in fitting measure to his eminence:

May its Creator shield your glory, ʿAbd Allāh,

from the eyes of meteors, not from human eyes.

The eye leaves safe whatever it sees and then turns away

from; it overtakes whatever forms it desires.

You are the second of the two destined for sacrifice; high honor courted you,

and you won it, though it lay between fang and claw.

None besides you is your equal among mankind,

and the lion is deadlier in deed than the leopard.

You raced others toward guests, when they stood

like an ass between going to water and departing.

O plunderer of high honor's robes, and its guardian

with Samharī spears, rather than the pricking of needles.

How many a stand your son, the Chosen One, took, while they drew back

from it, and chain mail laid men low through weakness.

    فكمْ جُمانٍ معَ الحصباءِ منتثرِ

    We surely let tears flow in love for him;

how many pearls lie scattered among the pebbles!

Say to the one famed by the title 'Unlettered,'

by that name in the earlier scrolls and scriptures:

Leave the reed pen to those who boast of it,

and boast instead of long Rudaynī spears.

For those are your pens, which, when they write

glory, bring ink of unavenged blood.

How many a lover yearns to meet you, his tears

like ripples in a stream running down a slope.

Your family and companions, with no affliction among them,

are like lions, horsemen, and camels for slaughter.

The gardens of your praise are reinforced by their epithets,

and, though these differ, they are substitutes among the flowers.

In your right hand is hell for enemies, while for those

who befriend you, water wells up, enough for whole companies.

I never imagined a palm, before the hand of the Messen-

ger of God, could close upon fire or a river.

Stand at the Bridge—or how can we

walk over deep chasms or run over blazing fires?

You are the first of them in creation and the last

in being sent forth; that is precedence, not precedence through running.

Alas for those who stubbornly opposed or foolishly denied,

and did not behold you with thought true to the report.

If they belittled what they saw in 'The Star' when it was revealed,

the fault for smallness lies with the eye, not the star.

The messengers before had companions who excelled, yet none

among them was like Abū Bakr or ʿUmar.

Seeking blessing through you, it was even said: 'If dizziness strikes

my camels, the sight of you cures them of dizziness.'

O you whom the sun's heat gives its full measure—where has gone

a cloud that screened the sun, neither raining nor traveling?

I praised you seeking intercession, not

the daughters of Aʿwaj with white stockings and forehead blazes.

O giver who becomes richer every time he gives,

deep water is enriched by long scooping with little cups.

O you who once offered the Lord of the Throne a hundred

sturdy she-camels, each like the letter nūn in a written line.

Before him Gabriel bowed in sure confidence,

    while others bowed amid uncertainty.

    هذا اتفاقُ فتاءِ السنِّ والكبرِ

    You were great in rank among them while still a youth;

this is the union of youth in years and greatness.

You renounced the world's adornment for an afterlife,

as a lengthening night robs the day by shortening it.

You defeated unbelievers with dust; their eyes

nearly lose within it the lightness of sparks.

If longing tears apart a heart where you dwell,

a sheath is worn out by guarding a keen, hard-tempered blade.

O Seal of the Prophets, there had been a need

for your coming among those who wield benefit and harm.

How many nations watched for your coming, as

people watch for the festival's return from a journey.

Ask and be given; intercede and have your intercession accepted; whatever you wish shall be.

Had you wished, al-Aḍḥā would have moved to Ṣafar.

May you be bereft of life's final years wasted in vain,

for they add nothing to our other days.

So be my intercessor and my treasure at the Return, when

I come forth from my pit like a destitute man.

Do not entrust me to any speech or deed,

nor to the weighing of my deeds, for I am not guiltless.

    فاعطفْ على جبرتي يا جبرَ مُنْكَسري

    My master, my body is too weak for Laẓā's blaze;

so look kindly on my frame, O mender of my broken self.

Through you I hope from the Lord of the Throne for well-being

in family, circumstance, high standing, and lifespan.

Upon you be the finest of God's blessings,

as long as a full moon shines and gray doves mourn in the trees.
