    O departed ones, with whom my tears depart!

    Since you left, the pupil of my eye has not ceased

    To shed tears; and the heart whose longings have grown

    Great is empty of you, yet full.

    فيهِ معانٍ لها الأرواحُ أثمانُ

    Your letter arrived, its bird of omen auspicious;

    In it are meanings whose price is souls.

    I could not tell whether, from your letter, there hastened to me the

    Full moons, or gazelles from it flirted with me.

    فكيفَ أسلو وحولَ الوردِ ريحانُ

    O its script, O basil pen, be around me;

    How then can I forget, with basil around the rose?

    May God protect you from an eye bewitched by you

    Through magic—are you then, O Muʿadh, an enchanter?

    And O string of scattered pearls—as is your rightful due—

    An entire divan has indeed ransomed every verse of yours.

    May you never say, 'Enough for me,' though you intoxicate my mind, since

    You have captured my heart, and this captivity is kindness.

    And you, O noble ones who sent it, be

    Gentle with my heart, for you dwell within it.

    My affection for you has become a single color,

    For many colors in affection do not please me.

    These are letters of brothers in pure friendship, who are content

    With them when the table lacks brothers.

    مني السلامُ عليهمْ حيثما كانوا

    May God, Lord of the Throne, watch over you, O company;

    Peace from me be upon them, wherever they may be.
