غيريsomeone other than me يُغيِّرُهchanges him الجفاestrangement
غيري يُغيِّرُه الجفا
ويصدُّand turns away عنْfrom ميْتٍa dead one بحيْfor a living one
ويصدُّ عنْ ميْتٍ بحيْ
Others are changed by estrangement,
Others are changed by ill treatment,
and turn from a dead one for a living one.
And he turns away from the dead as from the living.
لاnot أرتضيI accept ودَّthe affection of امرئٍa man
لا أرتضي ودَّ امرئٍ
إنْif زدتُI increased رشداًin wisdom زادَhe increased غيْin error
إنْ زدتُ رشداً زادَ غيْ
I do not accept the affection of a man
I do not approve the affection of a man
who, if I grow in wisdom, grows in error.
Who, when I show wisdom, shows more folly.
إنindeed الغنيَّthe rich man هوhe الغنيّthe rich man
إن الغنيَّ هو الغنيّ
بربِّهِthrough his Lord والمالُand wealth فَيْa shadow
بربِّهِ والمالُ فَيْ
Indeed, the truly rich man is rich
Truly the rich man is he
through his Lord; wealth is a shadow.
Who is rich in his Lord, not in money.
ماnot كلُّall شيءٍthings كافياًsufficient
ما كلُّ شيءٍ كافياً
وإذاand if قنعْتَyou are content فبعضُthen a little of شيْsomething
وإذا قنعْتَ فبعضُ شيْ
Not even everything is enough;
Not everything suffices,
yet if you are content, a little of something suffices.
And when you are content, it is still not enough.
عزَّwas hard to attain الخلاصُdeliverance فلمْyet did not أقلْI say
عزَّ الخلاصُ فلمْ أقلْ
هذاthis جناهُhe brought it upon أبيmy father عليْme
هذا جناهُ أبي عليْ
Deliverance was hard to attain, yet I did not say:
Deliverance is difficult, so I have not achieved
“This is what my father brought upon me.”
What my father Abu Ali attained.
