Yours is the right that is due,

and your excellence is not concealed.

And beneath your loftiness lies the height

to which the seven radiant planets rise.

And above the Virgin's son stands a son,

and above the Virgin's son stands a father.

    يَقُودُ هَدِيَّهَا الأَدَبُ

    A visitor came to me from you;

    literary refinement guides her course.

She put Ibn al-Husayn to shame, so

he has no claim to beauty.

And she called out to al-Radi: “Indeed,

you have resembled me, but the teeth's fresh luster eluded you.”

    Exalted is God, who bestows

perfection—and excellent is what He bestows!

    Her meanings flirt with me,

so they unveil, then veil themselves.

And yet the night journey was marred—

and my whole life is a wonder—

and she told me of your illness.

May illness pass your glory by!

So I became like the Errant One's companion,

sobbing on this side of the pass.

For you are my greatest treasure,

and the densely wooded stronghold of my honor.

And you are all my means of support

    when means are lacking.

I found you my provision and the wealth

of my hand, when the gold was taken away.

    For had you not preserved

me, while my reason was snatched away,

    and with scattered pearls mended

a rift that cannot be mended...

May the stars of the green sky be your ransom,

    neither non-Arabs nor Arabs.

And may you remain forever amid clouds

    of blessings, drifting along.
