إِنَّمَاnothing but كَانَwas رِيقُكَyour saliva الْعَذْبُsweet شُهْداًhoney
حَيْثُsince أَهْلُpeople of الْهَوَىlove ذُبَابٌflies مُكِبَّهْcrowding eagerly
Your sweet saliva was nothing but honey,
Your sweet saliva was honey
for lovers were flies crowding over it.
Where the lovers are flies gathered
ثُمَّthen لَمَّاwhen الْتَحَيْتَyou grew a beard طَارُواthey flew away جَميِعاًall together
مَاnothing لِطَرْدِfor driving away الذُّبَابِthe flies مِثْلُlike الْمَكَبَّهْthe food cover
Then, when you grew a beard, they all flew away.
Then when you frowned, they all flew away
Nothing drives flies away like a food cover.
Nothing drives away flies like a frown
