    وَجُودُكَ فِينَا لاَ السَّحَابُ السَّوَاكِبُ

    Your good fortune, not what the stars claim;

and your bounty among us, not the pouring clouds.

The dark raincloud chokes on the day of its outpouring,

when gifts flow forth from your two palms.

And even to the sun, in the splendor of midmorning,

its radiance seems small when processions circle you.

    وَشيدَ رُكْنٌ مِنْهُ وَاعْتَزَّ جَانِبُ

    Through you, God's religion rejoiced in its prime;

a pillar of it was raised, and a flank grew mighty.

And the days have come to wear lovely ornaments,

their necks and bosoms already adorned.

One part of the earth vied in glory with another, until

its western lands put its eastern lands to shame.

    وَمُلْكُكَ مَحْفُوظٌ وَحِزْبُكَ غَالِبُ

    Your banner is victorious, and your following triumphant;

your kingdom is protected, and your following prevails.

    وَبَأْسُكَ مَرْهُوبٌ وَسَهْمُكَ صَائِبُ

    Your bounty is bestowed, and your resolve takes effect;

your might is feared, and your arrow hits its mark.

    وَحُبُّكَ فَرْضٌ فِي الْعَقَائِدِ وَاجِبُ

    The metaphors of radiant qualities are reality in you;

and love for you is a duty binding in belief.

So through you, praises find the straight course to their true aim,

when paths fail them with anyone but you.

A house among the Ansar raised you high, itself raised

by ancestral ties to the summit of the lofty house.

And Sa'd brought forth from you a full moon of the caliphate,

by which the world shines and darkness is dispelled.

And who has glory over humankind like Sa'd?

For Sa'd is a minister to the Prophet and a companion.

Virtues unworn despite the long span of ages,

with no impurity tainting what is pure and unalloyed in them.

God bless you—a lion who guarded the realm of guidance,

and a keen Yemeni sword whose striking edges never failed it,

and a full moon of perfection, shining, around which gleam

stars from among the victorious princes.

When kings are mentioned, who is like Yusuf,

making peace and waging war in guidance's cause?

And he gives the hard, straight lances their due,

and secures Time's favor, though Time is displeased.

Robes of adornment drape amply over his sides,

    pure, unsoiled by faults.

And across the lands, fragrant with his renown, pass

led steeds, urged on by the east wind and the south winds.

Is musk crumbled along the east wind's path,

or has it recalled your glory and noble deeds?

By your life, we cannot tell, when we are raised

by the ranks at your court of exalted majesty,

and eyes are gladdened at your sight, and captured

by your decisive speech are beautiful rarities—

is that unmixed wine, or noble traits?

And is it honey, sweet to gather, or innate dispositions?

The awe of kingship amid the promise of mercy,

as clouds flow freely amid the lightning.

Indeed, by the stout young she-camels in the desert's deep seas,

receding until their humps can no longer be seen,

when the sea of mirage surges at a gust of the east wind,

    they float in the mirage and sink;

they crossed toward the Ancient House, despite sore hooves,

desert wastes where noble mounts cannot emerge unscathed—

    وَأَنْتَ حُسَامُ الدِّيِنِ وَاللهُ ضَارِبُ

    truly, you are the pillar of kingship, and God raises it;

and you are religion's sword, and God strikes with it.

You summoned the lands and their people to safety,

while every heart was pounding with fear.

You calmed the sea of calamity while its depths foamed,

and the oncoming surge of death's waves piled wave on wave.

You assailed wavering doubt with guidance,

and false conjectures were stoned within it.

You made truth's paths clear to creation, after

its traces had faded and its ways were effaced.

And the month of fasting found in you a caliph

whose heart keeps watch in the station of remembrance.

The month resolved to leave you, not from weariness,

for its aims were fulfilled through righteousness.

And Eid al-Fitr came to you, folding up the distance for you,

and the mounts were brought to rest for it in your assembly.

It is but one of your petitioners, come

enticed toward what you possess by coveted gifts.

O my lord, take her—a graceful maiden in your praise,

at whose sight beautiful, budding-breasted maidens grow jealous.

And as a garden of fingertips whose leaves have ripened,

with a shower from your fingertips poured upon them.

May you never cease harvesting victory from the trees of spears,

and bringing hopes near, though they are unruly and hard to tame.

    وَلَوْ سَكَتُوا أثْنَتْ عَلَيْكَ الْحَقَائِبُ

    And may the mounts praise your eminence on their night journeys;

even if they fall silent, the saddlebags will praise you.
