Your days are joys and festivals for us:

a feast, a happy Nowruz, and a birthday.

They visit you at intervals through time, as though they were

suppliants hoping for your palms' bounty, and petitioners.

You offer each an address of its own:

from us come pearls for them; from them, the necks.

Your bounty has indeed embraced whoever came seeking

your gifts—even the festivals receive largesse.

The branches of wishes bring their fruit near to you,

and Time offers you help and happiness.

It learned from your character justice among humankind:

thus want is annihilated, and generosity brought into being.

When you seek something difficult or pursue the unassailable,

your good fortune summons difficulties, and they submit.

Your abode, where clouds pour down dew,

is a noonday refuge, where dawn after night travel gives cause for praise.

Pasture-seekers look hopefully to it when rain fails,

and riders seek it when provisions run out.

The hearts of bounty-seekers yearn for its shade,

so pack-saddles and saddle-frames are put to use toward it.

You drew your arm's keen sword while the land trembled,

and terror flashed and thundered over it.

You led the [steeds] toward it, with victory fluttering,

waving above them, with angels in hosts.

No obstacle kept them from attaining their goal,

nor did reinforcement from God ever fail them.

You fought the factions of error strenuously,

and their schemes did not save them from your sword's edge.

They sought refuge in peace, in surrender and fear,

having approached death's watering place—or nearly so.

You reunited the blades with their sheaths,

after sheaths and scabbards had grown desolate because of them.

You gave your sword's edge rest from their lifeblood,

after they had long repeated their appeals to you.

The strongest armor whose protection they trusted

against your might was submission to it and acquiescence.

    فللأمْنِ إصْدارٌ علَيْكَ وإيرادُ

    Through peace you secured the land for its people;

security's departures and arrivals depend on you.

Coats of armor became mere tunics,

and war's burdens of mail became cloaks.

O Yusuf, speech about you, however lofty,

can only fall short: no tally can encompass the raindrops.

You climbed the heights of majesty, and praise was secured

for you by noble fathers and forefathers,

and true kings who, when terror befell the people

through calamity, acted resolutely—or, when hardship struck, gave generously.

    يَرِفُّ بِها هَدْيٌ ويَشْرُقُ إرْشادُ

    Their deeds shine white; their domed tents are red;

guidance flutters within them, and wise direction shines.

Noble, sleek steeds surround them, and before them,

for the seeker of hospitality, a fire is kindled and fed.

And assemblies frequented by valor and generosity,

where threats go unfulfilled and promises are kept.

    فصُلْتَ كَما صالُوا وسُدْتَ كَما سادُوا

    You spared no effort to excel in following their path;

you charged as they charged, and ruled as they ruled.

A tale narrated by the Mashrafi sword,

with a chain of authority among the lofty Samhari spears.

May you ever terrify your enemies on their mountain peaks,

undo what they made fast, and inhabit what they built.

    أتَتْكَ على آثارِهِ منْهُ أعْدادُ

    And may a happy Nowruz, now past, bring you joy;

may multitudes of its kind come to you in its wake.

It came to you knowing your generosity among humankind,

and hoped for the bounty from you that it habitually receives.

    فلازالَ يَحْدوها إليْكَ ويَقْتادُ

    It is but a scout for glad tidings;

may it ever drive them toward you with song and lead them.
