مَلَكْتَyou have taken possession of رَسولَO Messenger اللهِof God رِقّيmy bondage فمَنْso who يَبْرَحْcan depart
وأوْلَيْتَنيand you have granted me الحَظَّthe share الرّغيبَbountiful ومَنْand who يَشْرَحْcan describe
You hold me in bondage, O Messenger of God—who could depart?
You possessed the Messenger of Allah as a healing, so who would depart?
And you have granted me a bountiful share—and who could describe it?
And you granted me the most hopeful of fortunes, so who would feel joy?
فلاso may ... not كانَbe ليmine جَفْنٌan eyelid لبُعْدِكَat your absence لمْnot يَصُبْpour tears
ولاand may ... not كانَbe ليmine قَلْبٌa heart بقُرْبِكَat your nearness لمْnot يَفْرَحْrejoice
So may no eyelid be mine that does not pour tears at your absence,
For I had no eyelid from your absence that did not swell,
Nor may a heart be mine that does not rejoice at your nearness.
Nor a heart from your nearness that did not delight.
فسَعْيُكَfor your striving مَدْعىًa place of appeal لاnot يُخَيِّبُdisappoints مَنْwhoever نأىis far away
ورَعْيُكَand your care مرْعىًa pasture لاnot يَضيقُis too narrow بمَنْfor whoever يَسْرَحْgrazes freely
For your striving is a place of appeal that disappoints none who are far away,
Your effort is an invitation that does not disappoint he who turns away,
And your care is a pasture never too narrow for those who graze.
And your care is a pasture that does not constrict he who roams freely.
فِداكَa ransom for you فؤادٌa heart ضَمّenfolded حُبَّكَlove for you حَبّةًa seed
كماas يودَعُis deposited المَبْذورُthe sown seed فيin الأرضِthe earth أوor يُطْرَحْis cast
May a heart that enfolded love for you as a seed be your ransom,
My heart that harbored love for you is a ransom for you,
As seed is deposited in the earth or cast there.
As what is sown in the earth deposits or is strewn about.
فأصْبَحَso it became غُصْناًa bough ذاpossessing مُروحٍexuberance ونَعْمَةٍand luxuriance
وماand what عُذْرُهُits excuse مَهْماwhenever ذُكِرْتَyou are mentioned فلَمْthen not يَمْرَحْrejoice
So it became a bough full of exuberance and luxuriance;
So it became a branch with a gentle breeze and blessing,
And what excuse has it, whenever you are mentioned, for not rejoicing?
And its excuse is not void, whenever you are mentioned but it does not dance.
رَجاؤكَhope in you سُؤْليmy wish كلّماwhenever جَرَحَwounds الأسىsorrow
ولاand not يَسْتويare equal آسِيthe healer of الكُلومِthe wounds ومَنْand whoever يَجْرَحْwounds
Hope in you is what I seek whenever sorrow wounds,
My hope in you is my request whenever sorrow wounds,
Nor are the healer of wounds and the one who wounds alike.
And the grieved of anguish is not equal to the wounded.
وقدْand already كانَthere was فيin قَلبيmy heart لبُعْدِكَfrom your absence قُرْحَةٌa sore
وفَوْديَand my temple hair لمْnot يَشْهَبْturn gray وسِنّيَand my tooth لمnot يَقْرَحْcome fully in
And a sore from your absence was already in my heart,
There was in my heart from your absence a lesion,
While my temple hair had not grayed, nor had my tooth yet come fully in.
And my delegation did not become white-haired, nor did my years become decrepit.
فكَيْفَso how وقدْand already رانَتْhave encrusted علَيْهِover it ذُنوبُهُits sins
وإنْand though أنّنيthat I لمْnot أُضّرَحْI have been buried فَوَيْليthen woe to me مَتىwhen أُضْرَحْI am buried
How, then, now that its sins have coated it with rust?
So how could it, when sins have flowed upon it,
And though I have not yet been buried, woe to me when I am buried!
And I—woe is me—have not been shrouded, so when will I be shrouded?
فَضَلْتَyou surpassed النّبِيئِينَthe prophets الكِرامَnoble مَزيّةًin distinction
وكمْand how vast بيْنَbetween رَبِّmy Lord اشْرَحْexpand وبيْنَand between ألَمْhave ... not? We expanded
You surpassed the noble prophets in distinction:
You have given the noble prophets special preference,
And how vast the difference between 'My Lord, expand' and 'Have We not expanded'!
And how vast between “My Lord, relieve” and “Did We not expand?”
