مَنِwhoever اسْتَغْضَبْتَyou provoked to anger منْamong هَذيthis الخَليقَهْcreation
بمُغْضِبَةٍwith an outrage بإنْكارٍof condemnation خَليقَهْworthy
Whoever you provoke to anger among these creatures
You were angered at this creation,
with an outrage worthy of condemnation,
With anger and denial of the Creator,
ولمْand did not يغْضَبْgrow angry فتَيْسٌthen a he-goat أوor حِمارٌa donkey
مَجازاًfiguratively لاno لعَمْريby my life بلْrather حَقيقَهْin truth
and does not grow angry, is a he-goat or a donkey—
Yet no goat or donkey was angered -
not figuratively, by my life, but in truth.
Not figuratively, no, in truth!
بعَثْتُI sent بمُرْسِلٍwith a message-bearer لكَto you معْwith عَتيقيmy freedman
فلَمْthen did not تُطِعِyou obey الرّسولَthe messenger ولاnor عَتيقَهْhis freedman
I sent you a messenger along with my freedman,
I sent you a messenger with my servant,
but you heeded neither the messenger nor his freedman.
But you did not obey the messenger or servant.
وطوّقتَand you saddled السّفيرَthe envoy الذَّنْبَthe blame لمّاwhen
عجِلْتَyou hurried بهِwith him ولمْand did not تُبْلِعْهُyou let him swallow ريقَهْhis saliva
And you hung the blame around the envoy's neck when
You put the blame on the envoy
you hurried him and did not let him swallow his saliva.
When you were hasty and did not let him explain.
إمامُa leader جَماعَةٍa congregation وقَريعُand a champion تَقْوَىpiety
ومُبْلِغُand a bearer حُجّةٍproof وحَفيظُand a vigilant guardian سِيقَهْa driven herd
A leader of a congregation and a champion of piety,
An imam leading the community, and reproving piety,
and a bearer of proof and a vigilant guardian of a driven herd.
Conveying proof and protecting dignity,
فَبُؤتَso you came away بِهاwith it علَىthroughout الأيّامِthe days داءًa disease
عُضالاًincurable لاnot تُفيقُyou recover علَيْهِfrom it فيقَهْa moment of recovery
So you came away with it—a disease for all your days,
You have afflicted the days with an incurable disease,
incurable, from which you never once recover.
Over which clear thinking will have no sway.
وقدْand indeed عارَضْتَyou contradicted عُذْرَكَyour excuse باعتِرافٍwith an admission
فزِدْتَso you added مذمّةًdisgrace تسِمُit brands الطّريقهْthe way
And you have contradicted your excuse with an admission,
You denied your excuse with a confession,
thus adding disgrace that brands your conduct.
Increasing blame that stains the path.
وهلْand is there بعْدَafter اعْترافٍan admission منْany نِزاعٍdispute
وهلْand is there بعْدَafter افْتِصالٍseparation منْany وَثيقَهْa bond
And is there any dispute after an admission?
After a confession, is there still dispute?
And is there any bond after separation?
After being unbound, is there still bondage?
ومَنْand whoever جهِلَwas ignorant of الحُقوقَrightful dues أطاعَobeyed نفْساًa soul
ببَحْرِin the sea of الجهْلِignorance راسِبَةًsinking غَريقَهْdrowned
And whoever is ignorant of rightful dues obeys a soul
Whoever is ignorant of rights, obeys his soul
sinking, drowned in the sea of ignorance.
Sunk in the sea of ignorance, drowning.
ومَنْجَىand escape نيقَةٍrefinement أمْرٌa matter بَعيدٌdistant
إذاwhen نصَبَset up المهَنْدِسُthe engineer مَنْجَنيقَهْhis catapult
And refinement's escape is a distant prospect,
The survival of the boat is unlikely
when the engineer sets up his catapult.
When the engineer sets up his catapult.
