لَمَّا رَأيتُ الأَرْضَ دُونَك قَدْرُهَا

لَمَّا رَأيتُ الأَرْضَ دُونَك قَدْرُهَا

وَرَأَيْتُ حَقَّكَ آخِذاً بِعِنَانِي

وَرَأَيْتُ حَقَّكَ آخِذاً بِعِنَانِي

When I saw that the earth's worth was beneath yours,

When I saw the earth beneath you as worthless dust,

and saw your rightful claim taking hold of my reins,

And saw your right taking me by the reins,

أَهْدَيْتُكَ الْعِلْمَ الَّذِي بِقَبُولِهِ

أَهْدَيْتُكَ الْعِلْمَ الَّذِي بِقَبُولِهِ

كَتَبَ الالإَهُ مَزِيَّةَ الإِنْسَانِ

كَتَبَ الالإَهُ مَزِيَّةَ الإِنْسَانِ

I offered you the knowledge through whose acceptance

I gifted you knowledge whose acceptance

God ordained humankind's distinction.

God ordained as the honor of mankind.

وَاخْتَرتُ فَنَّ الطِّبِّ مِنْهُ لِقَوْلِهِ

وَاخْتَرتُ فَنَّ الطِّبِّ مِنْهُ لِقَوْلِهِ

الْعِلْمُ فِيمَا خَرَّجُوا عِلْمَانِ

الْعِلْمُ فِيمَا خَرَّجُوا عِلْمَانِ

And from it I chose the art of medicine, because of his saying:

And I chose the art of medicine for his saying:

Knowledge, as they have reported, is of two kinds:

“There are two branches of knowledge.”

فَالْعِلْمُ بِالأَدْيَانِ عِلْمٌ أَوَّلٌ

فَالْعِلْمُ بِالأَدْيَانِ عِلْمٌ أَوَّلٌ

وَالْعِلْمُ بِالأَبدَانِ عِلْمٌ ثَانِي

وَالْعِلْمُ بِالأَبدَانِ عِلْمٌ ثَانِي

thus knowledge of religions is the first kind,

So knowledge of religions is the first branch of knowledge,

and knowledge of bodies is the second.

And knowledge of bodies is the second branch.

سَلَبَ العِدَى كُتْبِي فَقَامَ بِنُصْرَتِي

سَلَبَ العِدَى كُتْبِي فَقَامَ بِنُصْرَتِي

حِفْظِي عَلَى عَجَلٍ وَفهْمِ جَنَانِ

حِفْظِي عَلَى عَجَلٍ وَفهْمِ جَنَانِ

The foes stole my books, so there came to my aid

It saved my books from harm and came to my aid

my memory, in haste, and my heart's understanding.

Through my memorization done hastily and the insight of two minds.

وَخَصَّصْتُهُ لَكَ بِالْعِلاَجِ لِكَوْنِهِ

وَخَصَّصْتُهُ لَكَ بِالْعِلاَجِ لِكَوْنِهِ

يُحْتَاجُ دُونَ سِوَاهُ كُلَّ زَمَانِ

يُحْتَاجُ دُونَ سِوَاهُ كُلَّ زَمَانِ

And I devoted it for you to treatment, since it

And I assigned it to you for treatment, because

is needed, to the exclusion of all else, in every age,

It is needed, unlike others, at all times,

حَتَّى تُرَى عُمُرَ الطَّبِيعَةِ بَالِغاً

حَتَّى تُرَى عُمُرَ الطَّبِيعَةِ بَالِغاً

بِمَشِيئَةٍ مِنْ مُبْدِع الأَكْوَانِ

بِمَشِيئَةٍ مِنْ مُبْدِع الأَكْوَانِ

so that you may be seen attaining the natural span of life,

Until the lifespan of nature is seen to reach

by the will of the Originator of the worlds.

Maturity by the will of the Creator of the cosmos.

فَانْشُرْ بِهِ ذِكْراً وَفَخْراً وَاسْتَزِدْ

فَانْشُرْ بِهِ ذِكْراً وَفَخْراً وَاسْتَزِدْ

مِنْ أَجْلِهِ أَجْراً بِكُلِّ مَكَانِ

مِنْ أَجْلِهِ أَجْراً بِكُلِّ مَكَانِ

So spread through it renown and glory, and seek more

So spread through it a mention, pride, and increase

reward on its account in every place.

For its sake a reward in every place.

أَبقَيْتَنِي فَتَرَكتُ ذِكْرَكَ بَاقِيا

أَبقَيْتَنِي فَتَرَكتُ ذِكْرَكَ بَاقِيا

يُتْلَى بِمَدْرَسَةٍ وَمَارِسْتَانِ

يُتْلَى بِمَدْرَسَةٍ وَمَارِسْتَانِ

You preserved me, so I left your remembrance enduring,

You made me remain, leaving mention of you remaining

recited in a school and a hospital.

To be recited in a school and hospital.

وَرَفَعْتَ مِنْ شَأنِي فَزَادَكَ مَنْ قَضَى

وَرَفَعْتَ مِنْ شَأنِي فَزَادَكَ مَنْ قَضَى

لَكَ بِالْعُلَى وَالْعِزِّ رِفْعَةَ شَأنِي

لَكَ بِالْعُلَى وَالْعِزِّ رِفْعَةَ شَأنِي

And you raised my standing; may He who decreed

And you raised my status, so the one who decreed

high rank and honor for you add my elevation to yours.

For you loftiness and honor increased my status.
