فأعادَ لَيلَتَنا صَباحاً أبْلَجا
Welcome to a phantom that visited me in night's deep gloom,
Greetings to a vision that visited me when the darkness of night fell,
and turned our night into a radiant morning.
And brought our night back to a bright dawn.

Its visit opened for a lovesick wanderer
His visit opened to a passionate lover,
the door of acceptance, which had long been hoped for.
The door of acceptance, and it was a blessed arrival.

God be praised for you, a hope-inspiring phantom,
Bless you, oh fanciful specter,
to whose cords the hands of our hope have clung.
Who tied to your ropes the hands of hope.

خطَّ النحولُ عليْهِ سَطْراً مُدْمَجا
How did you find your way, and was a bed visible to you
How did you find your way when a resting place appeared to you,
on which emaciation had traced a compact line?
On which emaciation drew a convoluted line?
ياO سالِكاًtravelling بمُحِبِّهwith his lover طُرُقَthe paths of النّوىseparation

O you who take your lover along the paths of separation,
Oh you who walks the paths of passion for his beloved,
why did you not take a path to reunion?
Why not take the way to connection as your course?
أفْديكَI would ransom you منْas a حَكَمٍjudge تأوّلَinterpreted حكْمَهُhis ruling

فقَضىso he decreed بقَتْلِfor the killing of العاشقينَthe lovers تحرُّجاout of scruple
فقَضى بقَتْلِ العاشقينَ تحرُّجا
I would ransom you, a judge who interpreted his ruling,
Ransom me from a judge whose judgment,
then sentenced the lovers to death out of scruple.
Sentenced lovers to death in revulsion.

And do you not see the flood of my overflowing tears
Or do you not see the flood of my tears,
kindling a hellfire that blazes within my ribs?
Fueling a hellfire in my chest, blazing?

I seek news from the flickering lightning when it flashes,
I seek council from the flashing lightning when it flickers,
and keep vigil with the long night when it darkens.
And keep vigil with the long night when it is gloomy.

Grant me your satisfaction, for I implore
through the virtues of the Commander of the Muslims, in whom hope is placed.
The jewels of the Commander of the Faithful, the hoped for.
