لَبِسْنَاwe wore فَلَمْbut did not نُبْلِwe wear out الزَّمَانَtime وَأَبْلاَنَاand it wore us out
تُتَابِعُfollows أُخْرَانَاthe last of us عَلَىin الغَيّerror أُولاَنَاthe first of us
We wore time, yet did not wear it out; it wore us out.
We wore but did not don the times, and we wore out,
The last of us follow the first of us in error.
While others follow in our footsteps to ruin.
وَنَغْتَرُّand we are beguiled بِالآمَالِby hopes وَالعُمْرُwhile life يَنْقَضِيdraws to a close
فَمَاso how كَانَwas بِالرُّجْعَىof returning إِلَىto اللَّهِGod أَوْلاَنَاmore fitting for us
And we are beguiled by hopes while life draws to a close.
We are deluded by hopes while life slips away,
So how much more fitting it would have been for us to return to God!
But returning to God was not our first concern.
فَمَاذَاso what عَسَىmight أَنْto يُنْظِرَgrant respite الدَّهْرُtime مَاwhat عَسَىmight
فَمَاfor ... not انْقَادَyielded لِلزّجْرِto rebuke الْحَثِيثِinsistent وَلاَnor لاَنَاsoftened
What respite, then, might time grant—what might it grant?
What then can we expect time to await? What can we expect?
For it has not yielded to insistent rebuke, nor softened.
It yielded not to stern warning, nor did it bend to us.
جَزَيْنَاwe repaid صَنِيعَkindness اللَّهِGod's شَرَّthe worst جَزَائِهِits recompense
فَلَمْso did not نَرْعَwe honor مَاwhat مِنْof سَابِقِearlier الْفَضْلِbounty أَوْلاَنَاHe bestowed on us
We repaid God's kindness with the worst recompense.
We rewarded God's work with the worst repayment,
So we did not honor the earlier bounty He bestowed on us.
Nor did we heed the forerunners of excellence.
فَيَاربِّso, O my Lord عَامِلْنَاtreat us بِمَاaccording to what أَنْتَYou أَهْلُهُworthy of it
مِنَof الْعَفْوِpardon وَاجْبُرْand mend صَدْعَنَاour fracture أَنْتَYou مَوْلاَنَاour Master
So, my Lord, treat us as befits You,
So O Lord, deal with us as You are worthy,
With pardon, and mend our fracture; You are our Master.
With pardon, and mend our fractures, You are our Master.
