قَدْindeed مَرَرْنَاwe passed بِدَارِby the house of عَبُّوʿAbbū الْوَالِيthe governor
وَهْيَand it ثكْلَىbereaved تَشْكُوlaments صُرُوفَvicissitudes of اللَّيَالِيthe nights
We have passed by the house of ʿAbbū, the governor,
We passed by the house of 'Abbū al-Wālī
and it is bereaved, lamenting the vicissitudes of the nights.
While she, bereaved, complained of the nights' vicissitudes,
أَقْصَدَتْstruck dead رَبَّهَاits master الْحَوَادِثُcalamities لَمَّاwhen
رَشَقَتْهُthey showered him بِصَاِئَباتِwith unerring shafts of زَوَالِruin
Calamities struck its master dead when
Misfortunes had led her to her Lord
they showered him with unerring shafts of ruin.
When they pelted him with the missiles of demise,
كَانَhe was بِالأَمْسِyesterday وَالِياًa governor مُسْتَطِيلاًoverbearing
وَهُوَand he الْيَوْمَtoday مَاnot لَهُfor him مِنْany وَالِيprotector
Yesterday he was an overbearing governor,
Yesterday he was a sturdy leader,
and today he has no protector.
Today he has no guardian.
