بَعُدْناwe have grown distant وإنْand even though جاوَرَتْناadjoined us البُيوتْthe houses
وجِئْناand we have come بوَعْظٍwith admonition ونَحْنُand we صُموتْsilent
We are far away, though the houses stand beside us.
And we have come bearing a lesson, though we are silent.
وأنْفاسُناand our breaths سَكَتَتْfell silent دَفْعَةًall at once
كَجَهْرِlike the loud recitation of الصّلاةِprayer تَلاهُfollowed it القُنوتْsilent devotion
And our breaths fell silent all at once,
Like prayer recited aloud, followed by silent devotion.
وكُنّاand we were عِظاماًmighty فصِرْناthen we became عِظاماًbones
وكُنّاand we used to نَقوتُwe feed فَهاso behold نحْنُwe قوتْfood
And we were mighty, then became bones.
And we once fed others; now, behold, we are food.
وكناand we were شموسsuns سماءsky العُلاglory
غربنthey set فناحتso wailed عليهاover them البيوتthe houses
And we were suns in the sky of glory;
They set, so the houses wailed over them.
فكمْso how often جَدّلَتْfelled ذاthe bearer of الحُسامِthe sword الظُّبىthe sword-edges
وذاand the possessor of البَخْتِgood fortune كمhow often خَذلَتْهُforsook him البُخوتْfortunes
How often have sword-edges felled the sword-bearer,
And how often have fortunes forsaken the fortunate!
وكمْand how often سِيقَwas borne للقَبْرِto the grave فيin خِرْقَةٍa rag
فَتىًa youth مُلِئَتْwere filled منْwith كُساهُhis garments التّخوتْthe clothing chests
And how often, in a rag, was borne to the grave
A youth whose garments had filled chests!
فقُلْso say للعِداto the enemies ذَهَبَhas gone ابْنُIbn (son of) الخَطيبِal-Khatib (the preacher)
وفاتَand passed away ومَنْand who ذاthis one الذيwho لاnot يَفوتْpasses away
So tell the enemies: Ibn al-Khatib has gone,
And passed away—and who is there who does not pass away?
فمَنْso whoever كانَwas يَفرَحُrejoicing منْكُمْamong you لهُon his account
فقُلْthen say يَفْرَحُrejoices اليومَtoday منْone who لاnot يَموتْdies
So whoever among you rejoices at his passing,
Then say: let him who never dies rejoice today.
