    Truth rises, while falsehoods sink.

And God is not questioned about His judgments.

The decree concerning what has been or is to be

is like the ultimate cause: how can it be explained?

Existence itself sometimes gives generously what

pleases souls, and sometimes withholds it.

    Ease after hardship is promised,

and patience is entrusted with imminent deliverance.

    وَكَفَاكَ شَاهِدُ قَيِّدُوا وَتَوَكَّلُوا

    Whoever prepares for what he hopes for succeeds;

sufficient witness is: “Bind fast, and put your trust.”

Whoever collects the debt his age owes him through good fortune

and the sword finds no hoped-for thing beyond his reach.

O Muhammad, praiseworthiness is your nature,

whose ornaments adorn a man among humankind.

As for your good fortune, it is, beyond dispute,

a covenant recorded by the decrees of destiny.

Yours are exalted qualities and those virtues

whose rare excellence supplies proverbial examples.

Yours is composure when the hills quake

and towering heights tremble with terror.

Yours are the open brow and the character

that the gaze of perfection is charged with contemplating.

    وَالْبَحْرُ أَنْتَ وَكُلُّ بَحْرٍ جَدْوَلُ

    You are the light, and every other light is darkness;

you are the sea, and every other sea a stream.

When you are mentioned, it is as though the east wind's breaths

held lingering incense and sandalwood in their air.

Whose imagination can describe you well,

when the qualities of your glory surpass imagination?

    وَاللهِ مَا جَلَّى بِحَمْدِكَ مِقُوَلُ

    By God, no panegyrist has given you your due;

by God, no eloquent tongue has fully revealed your praise.

Protect perfection with charms as far as you can, for

things may diminish through what makes them perfect.

Time has repented before you of what it committed,

and God commands repentance and accepts it.

If some past portion of your time brought

an injury, the future has delighted you.

Set this against that; let the latter intercede—the one

that pleased you—for what the former committed.

God has entrusted you with the affairs of His servants,

having chosen you for an office from which you cannot be removed.

When God enfolds you in His help

and decrees good for you, who can forsake you?

    وَإِذَا ضَرَبْتَ فكُلَّ عُضْوٍ مَفْصِلُ

    When you draw your sword, every hand becomes a sharpened blade;

when you strike, every limb becomes a joint.

If you relied upon the winds for a raid,

the east and north winds would rise to conduct it.

If you asked the stars for assistance and summoned their aid,

Simak the Unarmed would bear weapons for you.

Glory to Him who, through your eminence, has mended the breach

and restored the ornaments of the neck when it was bare.

The senses almost belied tangible realities,

and earlier first principles became unknown.

The earth was trembling and surging, while its people

were swept by the wind of torment and shaken.

    أَوْ عَاشَ فَهْوَ مُفَسَّقٌ وَمُضَلَّلُ

    Whoever among them died, died amid strife;

whoever lived was declared sinful and misguided.

    الدِّينُ وَالدُّنْيَا نَسِيجٌ هَلْهَلُ

    No pledge of allegiance saves, and no covenant protects;

religion and worldly life are a threadbare fabric.

Thus you kept from their horizons those who follow guidance

and from their judgments those who act justly.

Today, when the wrongdoer has confessed his sin,

submitting, and the excuse-maker has pleaded his defense,

embrace in your pardon whoever falsely accused or did wrong,

and follow your own course, which is the finest.

    وَاطْلَبْ مَدَى الدُّنْيَا فَسَعْدُكَ مُقْبِلُ

    Guard the sanctuary of eminence, for your glory brings aid;

seek the world's farthest reach, for your good fortune advances.

Rise forth: God's help is a banner above you,

and a curtain of good fortune hangs over you.

Terror before you sends one host after another,

host following host, even across great distances.

The Spirit, God's Spirit, executes His decree

for you, and the noble angels descend.

Ismail did not understand what you hung about his neck

of favor—if only he were one who understood.

Blessings enjoyed in ease, and temperate shade

whose lushness glistens with dew, and sweet-flowing water.

He was fed and clothed, your bounty his guarantor,

a dependent spared whatever weighs heavily.

The devil of delusion enticed him toward a goal

short of which even docile riding beasts are exhausted.

Seeking through him a step toward attaining what

his powers of perception had imagined.

How swiftly he brought him forth, then cast him back

into a disastrous lapse—an evil dwelling indeed!

    وَاللهُ يُمْلِي للِطُّغَاةِ وَيُمْهِلُ

    Then he gave Qays the cup of death to drink;

God grants tyrants respite and delays their punishment.

    شَهِدَ الْحَكِيمُ بِذَاكَ والْمُتَمَلِّلُ

    Treachery is the worst of reprehensible traits;

the sage and the religious adherent attest to that.

Ask the dwellings of the treacherous, for

their ruins will surely answer whoever asks.

Effacing winds have dragged their skirts across them,

and trotting wolves have howled in their precincts.

O murderous ambush, whose treacherous footsteps were hidden by

the stratagems of deceit and enveloping darkness!

Time stumbled over it, and it was a lapse

most hideous; the world is serious and jesting by turns.

    فَاسْرَحْ وَرِدْ فَهُوَ الْكَلاَ وَالْمَنْهَلُ

    Your fortunate stars are safe from a highwayman's assault;

roam and drink, for there are pasture and watering-place.

The fighter was thereafter slain with his own weapon,

and Saturn fled from it and slipped away.

A rabble of cowards, whenever they were stopped,

heard their appointed deaths call them, and slipped away.

They entered the lion's thicket by night,

while the full moon was a crown encircled with stars.

Had God not defended you, and granted a protection

in whose cloaks you found yourself arrayed,

the rents they tore would never have been patched,

the neck they stripped would never have been adorned.

You stood firm, your heart resolved, amid a calamity

in which the helper failed and the stronghold betrayed.

The elder of the saints ransomed you with his life,

and life is the most cherished thing one can give.

They cared nothing, as their dogs assailed him

and fell upon him, that they themselves were not present.

So does the vile deceiver, when he attacks,

commit a deed beyond which nothing worse can be done.

You escaped as the full moon emerges after its dark phase,

swooping as a falcon swoops through the air.

You settled in a sheltered hollow of Wadi al-Asha,

where residence was honored and the lodging pleasant:

a seat of refuge and an abode of exile,

    a place of stability when feet slip;

the home of fidelity and dwelling of those

who gave protection and guaranteed mighty assistance.

    Until al-Musta'in summoned you—and he

was truly more devoted to the lost kingdom and better its guardian.

You departed from them while hearts reached

the openings of throats and tears streamed.

You indeed witnessed—and I have never witnessed such a scene—

the people sustaining their cries and wailing.

    وَبِكُلِّ دَارٍ مِنْكَ حُزْنٌ مُثْكِلُ

    In every assembly, on your account, a mourner's groan;

in every house, on your account, a bereaving sorrow.

They crowded around you until I imagined them

a flock of thirsty sandgrouse, your hand their watering-place.

They overcame you so that a will

of God might be fulfilled, emerging into existence and descending.

You departed from the lands of your kingdom, riding

the back of the surging sea—what patience could suffice?

The sea's ribs throbbed around you,

and the wind interrupted its sighing, then released it.

    In a situation—how dreadful a situation!—

at which Radhwa withers and Yadhbul droops.

Until you reached the fountainhead of kingship, where

the refugee is protected and grave difficulties are resolved.

The abode of the sons of Yaqub, tribes of guidance,

    and clouds of mercy whose rain is invoked;

    دِيَمُ الْوَرَى إِنْ أَحْسَنُوا أَوْ أَمْحَلُوا

    God's vicegerents, whose hands

    are humankind's steady rains, in prosperity or drought;

the pillars of the upright faith when

its strength weakens and its breast loses firmness.

Ibrahim suffices as the full moon of a caliphate

before whose radiant brow the perfect moons bow.

Ibrahim suffices as a lion of battle

before whose radiant brow the lion with cubs bows.

He enriched, endowed, cared, and spared hardship,

and assisted: he is the benefactor, the generous giver.

    Everything has a goal whose

landmarks are watched; everything has a decisive juncture.

You felt indignation for the upright faith and its people

    at the humiliation they had been forced to bear;

and for a community driven mad: had you not risen to act,

none would have been found to recite a healing charm or spit one.

With sound judgment you secured its foundations

and cut cleanly through once the joint became clear.

You undertook every difficulty in its cause, none of which

would have become easy without God and your mighty victory.

You sheltered its mosque, which they had neglected,

and showed mercy to its pulpit, which they had left unused.

The two shores united their hearts around you

and their hands, relying upon ardent resolve.

The armored warrior stirred bravely for battle,

and the ascetic stirred within his prayer niche.

The universe's stirring became plain: this world

above is shaken—how, then, the world below?

The Romans girded themselves to restore your right:

this is all-embracing assistance that bestows power.

The swimming ships welcomed you, cleaving the waters,

speeding toward what you seek and hope for.

Their sides display a frown, although

their faces beam at the victory you bring.

They are the lofty sailing ships, now

strutting and trailing their robes in the mantle of youth.

Each is a flying creature whose wing seems—

the sail itself—to shade its fledglings.

Hollow-bellied, it and those it carries aboard are borne by

Him who knows the female and what she carries.

They brought forth a radiant morning from your brow

that dispels darkness, though they themselves are darkest night.

They came from you upon the lands with a herald

of conquest and the victory to be welcomed.

A remnant of the people of Ad were destroyed

by a remnant of the barren wind and struck down.

    فَالآنَ لِلْحَقِّ الْمُبِينِ تَذَلَّلُوا

    They sought strength in pure, manifest falsehood;

now they have humbled themselves before evident truth.

Your blades dyed the partings of their hair

with henna of fresh blood whose color never fades.

    أَقْدَمْتَ فِي لَيْلِ الْعَجَاجِ فَأَجْفَلُوا

    You advanced on the day of tumult, and they retreated;

you charged through the night of dust, and they fled in panic.

You surprised the faction of rebellion, confusing for them

the paths of escape, and they hastened toward destruction.

At dawn you brought against them the blazes of steeds, as though

a radiant cloud had blocked the mountain pass.

    Each a sleek horse, white-blazed and white-stockinged,

driven into combat by a radiant, white-limbed rider.

Loud-winged when it races earnestly toward a goal,

and a nightingale when it sings its neigh.

A neck like an ostrich turning, and above it

an ornamented ear and a kohl-dark eye.

It is as though it were an image within a temple

for its delicacy, and yet itself a mighty edifice.

How strange! Can he fear, in the night of battle,

losing his way, when his slender lance is a burning wick?

An Indian channel whose beautiful clarity delights,

so clear the sword-polisher almost swims within it.

Ants drowned upon its surface and almost

sought escape, but their legs held them fast.

Its palace is polished smooth, and its surface

is rose-red, while its bank hangs down.

And every blue lance, if its eyes complain

of lacking kohl, is painted with battle-dust.

    Its sides sway in intoxication

from the first and repeated draughts of blood it drinks.

How strange! The fresh blood upon its eye

is an inflammation, yet no killing-point escapes it.

God be praised for your day of conquests, for it is

    a day white-blazed and white-stockinged upon time.

God be praised for your stand, whose leaps

and steadfastness are a proverbial example.

    وَالسُّمْرُ تَنْقُطُ وَالصَّوَارِمُ تَشْكُلُ

    The horses are script, and the battlefield a page;

the brown spears add dots, and the sharp swords vowel-marks.

The bright blades have broken the letters of their sheaths,

and the points of straightened spears perform their work.

God be praised for your people amid entangled spears,

when the formidable caller repeated his summons and they advanced.

A people who, when midday heat scorches their faces,

screen themselves with banners of sacred struggle and find shade.

Their faces disdain the radiance of crescents,

and their hands put dark rainclouds to shame.

O House of Nasr, when a glorious deed is recalled,

do not shame those beneath you; proceed gently.

    فِي مِثْلهَا خَانَ الْبَلِيغَ الْمقْوَلُ

    Your eminence has limits that never end;

in speaking of its like, speech betrays the eloquent.

    تُرْوَى عَلَى مَرِّ الزَّمَانِ وَتُنْقَلُ

    Your achievements in religion are not hidden;

they are recounted and transmitted through passing time.

Are you not those stars of old who neither changed

nor altered after their Prophet's departure?

Was not Medina the dwelling of your ancestor?

Indeed—and his companion was the Prophet sent forth.

Sa'd—and what can tell you of Sa'd ibn Ubada?

Whoever delves into his glory speaks truly.

What can a panegyrist embellish after

the revealed Book has spoken your praise?

O quintessence of eminence, O moon of guidance,

and the firmest bond that cannot be severed!

May God's work bring you joy, when

minds were bewildered concerning you and interpreters conjectured.

May God's work bring you joy, when

conjectures grew confident concerning you and the unfettered speculator stopped.

May the servants rejoice that through you their faith has come

to be polished and washed clean of troubling doubt.

May the lands rejoice that through you there now

descends above them a curtain of protection and defense.

The conquest of conquests, whose days were delayed,

steals from a height toward you and comes rushing.

God restrains those souls He chooses

until their rightful and wrongful claimants become clear.

    Through testing, God awakens souls

that had neglected His binding right.

He arranges the hidden means for whoever He has decreed

a happiness from Himself, conveyed to that person.

Fortune is a matter beyond a person's power,

though one increases his toil and another reduces it.

Truth is truth; everything besides it is falsehood,

if the discerning thinker would investigate.

The world changes color and hopes differ,

but what must be must be: there is no turning from it.

    وَاللهُ نِعْمَ الْمُرْتَجَى وَالْمُؤَمَلُ

    To our Lord is the return, however long the span;

God is the finest object of hope and expectation.

    وَالسَّيْفُ يَسْبِقُ حَدُّهُ مَنْ يَعْذِلُ

    Your Lord has left no aggressor among your enemies;

the sword's edge outruns whoever would rebuke.

They were seized for their rebellion; can a fugitive escape

God, whether his steps quicken or he hastens?

They were caught at every mountain pass, and

the believers' watchful eyes raced toward them, so they were slain.

Away with them! They never held fast to fidelity

for a single day, nor gained what they had hoped for.

God's enemy saw the outcome of his treachery:

    disgrace both immediate and deferred.

He is one who deserves never to have

the tongue concern itself with mentioning him or pay him heed.

The world's insignificance before God required

that the despised and contemptible should take vengeance.

Here is Solomon the Prophet, from whom

some jinn seized the throne, as is related.

Calamities changed none of your innate qualities,

    for nature does not shift.

Rather, afterward your understanding grew more expansive

    until it encompassed everything intelligible.

Time gave you experience, building you up:

you set affairs upon the balance and bear their weight.

We have never seen anyone blamed for seasoned judgment,

unless the keen sword, honed thin, can be blamed.

    وَالْحَقُّ بَانَ فَلَمْ يَدَعْ مَا يُشْكِلُ

    Your affairs are settled, their supporting pillar firmly established;

truth has appeared, leaving nothing obscure.

Your son came to you, surrounded by good fortune,

and the people touched their lips to his hand and kissed it.

They glimpsed you, O full moon of perfection, and proclaimed “God is greatest!”

Then your crescent appeared, and they proclaimed “There is no god but God!”

Your company is reunited in the finest condition

you have known, and your Lord's bounty embraces all.

You have forgiven all the sins of my days,

even gray hair, whose offense cannot be overlooked,

when my eye saw your dwelling as a pilgrim's Kaaba,

and your hand a place for the circling pilgrims' kisses.

I offer you counsel in the art of governance through which

kings take pride over kings and surpass them.

Do not neglect prudence, with whose tether

the camels of rule and administration are secured.

Make your silence a reflection on what has passed,

and measure by it what comes afterward.

A matter you belittle may grow, just as

bodies grow upon nourishment and become stout.

    وَإِذَا غَفَلْتَ فَإِنَّهُ يُسْتَفْحَلُ

    Beware the small matter and attend to it;

if you neglect it, it becomes formidable.

    وَالْغَيْثُ بَعْدَ رَذَاذِهِ يَسْتَرْسِل

    Fire, when it first begins, is a spark;

rain, after its drizzle, pours freely.

    فَخطابُ غَيْرِ أُولِي النّهَى لاَ يَجْمُلُ

    When consultation calls you, consult those of understanding;

addressing those without understanding is not fitting.

Requite the wrongdoer for the wrong he does,

and the benefactor with good, in equitable recompense.

When you act justly, neither indulgence nor whim

should ever afterward be expected from you.

Whoever's protected standing you violate through punishment

should afterward be replaced by another.

    فَبِكُلِّ قَدْرِ رُئْبْةٌ لاَ تُهْمَلُ

    When you appoint, do so for capability, not desire;

every pot has a patch that must not be neglected.

Guard the tongue against ugliness, for sometimes

the tongue pierces where the blade recoils.

If you wound a noble person's heart, you cannot

heal it—and with what could it heal?

Accept the counsel of whoever comes to advise you,

and thank him, even when he is a lying schemer.

    فَمَرَدُّ أَمْرِ فَاتَ لاَ يُسْتَسْهَلُ

    Rely upon careful verification concerning denunciations;

reversing a matter already past is no easy task.

When an offender commits a wrong and his ignorance becomes clear,

be forbearing toward him: where is anyone without ignorance?

Honor past services; do not waste them, for they are

a debt whose procrastinating debtor is blamed.

When someone departs from your vicinity,

consider thoughtfully what he carries away about you.

Set over the practices you have established

a watchful eye that brings every circulating allegation.

    فَبِقَدْرِ مَا تُبْدِيهِ قَدْرُكَ يحملُ

    Do not display weakness when hardships befall;

your standing rests upon the measure of what you show.

Take wealth by its rightful due, and know that

wealth brings you to the far-off goal.

Use it to meet the expenses of governance, and save

a surplus; match what comes in with expenditure.

    فَالْبُخْلُ وَالتَّبْذِير مِمَّا يُرْذَلُ

    Consider the balance of giving and withholding;

miserliness and extravagance are both contemptible.

Hold fast to piety and to the character that

restrains souls from ugliness and reproves them.

Divert your soul from pleasures toward what

delights and occupies the wise person's soul.

The children of time follow their father's path:

if he is mighty, they are mighty; if he is abased, they bow.

Deal with them through pardon, and do not uncover

their veil, for you gain nothing great by doing so.

    فَمَتَى حَلاَ أَوْ لَذَّ هَذَا الْحَنْظَلُ

    Time and its people were blamed before us;

when was this bitter colocynth ever sweet or pleasant?

All this—yet your understanding in the caliphate is

more illustrious, and your judgment in governance better.

My lord, time has broken me and subjected me

to injustice, while you are the most just imam.

It attacked my wealth and terrified my refuge

unjustly, burdening me with what cannot be borne.

The encircling ocean cast us away; had it known

a place farther beyond itself, it would have told us, “Depart!”

Separation has killed us: alike are those

driven from their homelands and those slain.

This is an analogy whose judgment cannot be rejected,

after the revealed Book has borne witness.

    وَالْمَاءُ شرطُ حَياتِهِم والسُنبُلُ

    I find myself among downy young ones like sandgrouse chicks;

water and ears of grain are conditions of their life.

    وإذا اعْتَذَرْتُ إِلَيْهِمُ لَمْ يَقْبَلُوا

    If I strive to meet their wants, I cannot;

if I make excuses to them, they do not accept them.

I am one who has no means of access to you

to present before your eminence or use in supplication.

You yourself are my means of access to you; do not thwart

my purpose, for one like you speaks and acts.

    لَكِنَّ عُذْرِي وَاضِحٌ لاَ يُجْهَلُ

    Neither I nor my sons have any mercy but yours;

yet my excuse is clear and cannot be mistaken.

Take it as sincerity has willed, as though it were

a necklace articulated with the figures of rhetorical art.

Eloquence has offered through it unique pearls of wisdom,

in whose dissemination generosity and the assembly take pride.

Thank God for His favor toward you, for He

increases the grateful people's reward and makes it abundant.
