Time passes, and all that is transient departs,

save fair remembrance, for it endures.

Nothing remains of Kisra's vaulted hall after that

throng, except remembrance in the pages.

    Would al-Saffah, al-Mansur, and

al-Mahdi have been remembered at all,

or al-Rashid, al-Amin, and his brother,

but for the sharp point of the scribe's reed pen?

    Dust reclaimed what was decreed

for every creature by the Creator's wisdom,

save immortal praise, sweet of scent,

offering the tale of noble character.
