They planned a journey away from me this morning and resolved to go.
And oh, if only I knew what to do after they have gone!

And you who reproach me, you have reproached too much; be gentle.
For these are charms that bring my ailment no relief.

Tell eyelids other than mine, if you would speak:
A summer cloud will soon disperse.

And why should I not weep with a sore eye,
over parting from loved ones, streaming and pouring tears?

My heart's fracture has baffled every mender;
and has a ruby that cracks ever been mended?
لَضَيّعْتُI indeed squandered قَلْبيmy heart ثمّthen أصْبَحْتُI became ناشِداًa seeker of the lost

Indeed I squandered my heart, then began to seek it;
and it has been said: the squanderer most deserves loss.

I disclose what I conceal, though it does me no good;
but it is a complaint raised to God.

O master of my bondage, how often in love I find myself
abased as passion wills, and submitting.

And suppose I have sinned—and the slave is a sinner—
yet I have good deeds that intercede for my sins.

My affection is like rose-hued ambergris in fragrance:
when coldness burns it, it breathes out fragrance.

علىalthough أنّthat بابَthe gate الحِلْمِof forbearance عندَكَwith you أوْسَعُis wider
And your decision stands between forbearance and judgment,
though with you the gate of forbearance is wider.

Shall I reproach my fate, or desist? For it is only
God who gives what He wills and withholds.

I entrust my affairs in this world to One who knows,
whose sight and hearing have encompassed my affairs.

I shall submit my case to Caliph Yusuf;
then he will judge by manifest truth and proclaim it openly.

A meteor of guidance whose light dispels the darkness,
and an ocean of generosity whose waves surge forth.

And, praise be to God, what life-giving rain, what a lion, what a stronghold—
for whoever seeks bounty, attacks, or is terrified.

And a chronicle of glory, passed down again and again:
the account of his qualities is narrated and heard.

When his counsels and his swords are unsheathed
for war, say: which of the two swords cuts more keenly?

And if his resolves take their stand in a crisis,
then Islam is safe from whatever peril is anticipated.

You have outstripped others, as the noble steed conquers the course,
so no frontrunner hopes to attain the reach of your glory.

And you are the sword of kingship, its champion, who
drives foes from its two flanks and defends it.

And one like you is looked to for acceptance and approval,
and with you, too, there is a place for kindness.
