عابُواthey found fault وقالواand said بساقِهِon his leg شعرٌhair
عابُوا وقالوا بساقِهِ شعرٌ
لقدْindeed عَداهُhas passed him by الكَمالُperfection منْbecause of ساقِيa leg (poetically lengthened)
لقدْ عَداهُ الكَمالُ منْ ساقِي
They found fault and said, “There is hair on his leg;
They jested and said that his leg was hairy
perfection has indeed passed him by because of his leg.”
Perfection had passed him by from his legs
قُلتُI said انْظُرواlook ورْدَthe rose روْضِthe garden of وجْنَتِهhis cheek
قُلتُ انْظُروا ورْدَ روْضِ وجْنَتِه
وكُلُّand every ورْدٍrose مَشوكُthorn-covered السّاقِthe stem
وكُلُّ ورْدٍ مَشوكُ السّاقِ
I said, “Look at the rose in the garden of his cheek;
I said look at the roses of his garden
and every rose has a thorn-covered stem.”
Every rose has thorns on its stem
