وَافَىarrived لِعَطْفَتِكَof your kindness الْبَشِيرُthe bearer of good tidings فَلَوْso if غَدَتْbecame
رُوحِيmy soul جَزَاءَrecompense وُرُودِهِhis arrival لَمْnot أَعْدِلِI would be just
The herald of your kindness arrived; so, were
My soul the reward for his coming, I would not do him justice.
فَكَأَنَّso it is as though دَهْرِيmy fate لَمْnot يَزَلْcease لِيَto me مُسْعِفاًhelpful
وَكَأَنَّand as though حَالِيmy condition بَعْدُyet لَمْnot يتَبَدَّلِchange
So it is as though my fate had never ceased to aid me,
And as though my condition had not yet changed.
أَنْهَضْتَنِيyou raised me لَمَّاwhen قَعَدْتُI sat down وَقُمْتُand I rose فِيin
نَصْرِيmy aid ومَاand there is no لِيfor me مِنْany نَصِيرٍhelper أَوْor وَلِيprotector
You raised me when I sat down, and I rose to
My own aid, with no helper or protector.
وَأَجَرْتَنِيand you sheltered me إِذْwhen جَارَdealt unjustly دَهْرِيmy fate وَاعْتَدَىand assailed
وَرَمَىand shot بِسَهْمٍwith an arrow مِنْهُfrom it أَصْمَىstruck mortally مَقْتَلِيmy vital spot
And you sheltered me when my fate wronged me and assailed me,
And loosed an arrow of its own that mortally pierced my vital spot.
أَنْحَىstruck عَلَىat الأَبِthe father وَالشَّقِيقِand the full brother فَغُيِّبَاso both were taken away
عَنِّيfrom me فَحَالِيso my condition بَعْدَهُمْafter them لاَdo not تَسْأَلِask
It struck at my father and brother, and both were taken
From me; do not ask about my condition after their loss.
وَأَشَدُّand the harshest مَاwhat لُقِّيتُI was made to face فِيمَاamong what نَالَنِيbefell me
أَنْthat كُنْتُI was يَوْمَاًone day عَنْfrom رِضَاكَyour favor بِمَعْزِلِat a distance
And the harshest thing I faced among all that befell me
Was that one day I was far removed from your favor.
يَاO مُلْبِسِيyou who clothe me النُّعْمَىblessings بِأَيِّwith what عِبَارَةٍexpression
أَصِلُI convey الثَّنَاءَpraise لِمُلْكِكَto your rule الْمُتَفَضِّلِbeneficent
O you who clothe me in blessings, with what words
Can I convey praise to your beneficent rule?
يَاO مُبْقِياًsustaining رَمَقِيmy last breath بِفَضْلِthrough the abundance of حَنَانِهِhis compassion
يَاO مَفْزَعِيmy refuge in distress يَاO مَلْجَئِيmy shelter يَاO مَوْئِلِيmy haven
O you whose abundant compassion sustains my last breath,
O my refuge, O my shelter, O my haven!
دُمْremain فِيin ذِمَامِthe protection of اللهGod حِزْبُكَyour followers غَالِبٌvictorious
وَحِمَاكَand your domain مَحْرُوسٌguarded وَمُلْكُكَand your rule مُعْتَلِيexalted
May you remain in God's protection, your followers victorious,
And your domain guarded, and your rule exalted.
