    نَمَّ الظّلامُ بركْبِها المَحْثوثِ

    The flea's mounts advanced upon me;

    darkness betrayed their hurried caravan.

    With the black seed it greeted my arrival—

    Good God, what hospitality the wretch prepared!

    With them it swept away the scant remnant of my fortitude's grazing herd,

    at night; so the rope of patience is badly frayed.

    أو صِحْتُ منْهُ أنِفْتُ منْ تَحْنيثي

    If my soul patiently endures its harm, it becomes enslaved;

    or if I cry out because of it, I recoil from being made to break my oath.

    Two armies—night and a flea—so will

    the army of morning come to the rescue at my cry?
