سِهَامُarrows الْمَنَايَاdeaths لاَnot تَطِيشُstray وَلاَand not تُخْطِىmiss
وَلِلدَّهْرِand Time has كَفُّa hand يَسْتَرِدُّtakes back الَّذيwhat يُعْطِيit gives
The arrows of death neither stray nor miss.
And Time has a hand that takes back what it gives.
وَإِنَّاand indeed we وَإِنْand though كُنَّاwe were عَلَىupon ثَبجِthe swell الدُّنَاworldly life
فَلاَبُدَّso inevitably يَوْماًone day أَنْthat نَحُلَّwe alight عَلَىupon الشَّطِّthe shore
And we, though we are upon the swell of worldly life,
must one day come to rest upon the shore.
وَسِيَّانِand both are equal ذُلُّhumiliation الْفَقْرِpoverty أَوْor عِزَّةُhonor الْغِنَىwealth
ومَنْand whoever أَسْرَعَhastened السَّيْرَthe journey الْحَثِيثَswift وَمَنْand whoever يُبْطِيgoes slowly
And alike are poverty's humiliation and wealth's honor,
and whoever hastens at a swift pace and whoever goes slowly.
تَسَاوَىbecame equal عَلَىat وِرْدِthe watering place الرَّدَىdeath كُلُّevery وَارِدٍone coming to drink
فَلَمْso did not يُغْنِavail رَبُّthe lord السَّيْفِthe sword عَنْon behalf of رَبَّةِthe lady الْقُرْطِthe earring
All who come to drink are equal at death's watering place;
so the lord of the sword could not protect the lady of the earring.
