أألْقِيShall I cast الىto الأيّامِthe days فضْلَthe slack of مَقادَتيmy reins
فتَحْبِسُنيso they imprison me ماemphatic particle بيْنَbetween كدٍّtoil وإرْهاقِand exhaustion
Shall I cast the slack of my reins to the days,
I cast my days ahead in anxious thought,
so they imprison me between toil and exhaustion,
And they confine me in toil and weariness.
وأُتلِفُand I squander بينَbetween الخلْقِcreation والرِّزْقِand provision فِكْرَتيmy thought
ولسْتُand I am not بخَلاّقِa creator ولسْتُand I am not برَزّاقِa provider
and squander my thought between creation and provision,
I try to reconcile my mind and means of living,
though I am neither a creator nor a provider?
But I'm no miser, nor beneficent.
إذاif طُوِيَis folded الإثْراءُbecoming rich ليfor me فيin تملُّقٍflattery
رضِيتُI am content بعِزِّwith the dignity of النّفْسِthe soul فيamid عِزِّthe extremity of إمْلاقِpoverty
If wealth for me is wrapped in flattery,
If riches folded up for me in flattery,
I am content with my soul’s dignity amid extreme poverty.
I'd be content with my soul's honour in a shroud.
