أَبْشرْrejoice فقدfor indeed نِلْتَyou attained مَاwhat تَرْجُوyou hope for عَلَىin عَجَلِhaste
وَيَسَّرand made easy اللهُGod مَاwhat تَبْغِيهِyou seek it مِنْof أَمَلِhope
Rejoice, for you have swiftly attained what you hope for.
Rejoice, for you have obtained what you hope for in haste,
And God has made easy what you seek in hope.
And God has made easy what you desire of hope.
وَسَاعَدَتْكَand aided you الدُّنَاthe worlds فِيمَاin what تُؤَمَّلُهُyou hope for it
فَاهْنَأَso rejoice بِسَعْدٍin good fortune عَلَىthroughout الأيَّامِthe days مُتَّصِلِunbroken
And the worlds have aided you in what you hope for.
And the world has helped you in what you wish for,
So enjoy good fortune unbroken through the days.
So delight in continual good fortune.
وَاحْكُمْand rule عَلَىover الدَّهْرِtime وَافْعَلْand do مَاwhatever تَشَاءُyou wish بِهِwith it
فَالدَّهْرُfor time طَوْعُكَat your command وَالأَيَّامُand the days كَالْخَوَلِlike servants
And rule over time; do with it whatever you wish.
And rule over fate, and do what you want with it,
For time obeys you, and the days are like servants.
For fate is submissive to you, and the days are like a mare.
فَمَاfor never دَعَوْتَyou called بِبَدْرٍfor a full moon غَيْرَnot مُبْتَدِرٍhastening
وَلاَnor أَمَرْتَyou ordered بِأَمْرٍwith a command غَيْرِnot مُحْتَمَلِaccepted
For no full moon you summoned failed to hasten.
You have never called for a full moon that did not rise,
Nor did you give a command that was not accepted.
Nor commanded an order that could not be executed.
مَاnot لَذَّةُthe delight of الْعَيْشِlife إِلاَّexcept فِيin طَلاَوَa fawn and طِلاًwine

Life's delight lies only in a fawn and wine,
The pleasure of life is only in seeking entertainment,
Or union with a beloved, without rejection or weariness.
Or union with a beloved without disaffection or boredom.
خُذْهَاtake it كَمِثْلِlike شُعَاعِa ray of الشَّمْسِthe sun صَافِيَةًclear

Take it, clear as a ray of the sun,
Take it like the radiance of the pure sun,
Red—heed no reproach concerning it—
Rosy, in which you do not listen to blame.
مِنْfrom كَفِّthe hand of سَاحِرَةِbewitching الألْحَاظِglances فَاتِنَةٍcaptivating

From the hand of a captivating woman with bewitching glances,
From the palm of a charming sorceress of glances,
A beauty who sways proudly amid jewels and fine robes.
A beauty who struts between jewelry and gowns.
إِذَاwhen رَنَتْshe gazed أَوْor ثَنَتْshe bent أَعْطَافَهَاher sides مَرَحاًplayfully

When she gazes or bends her body playfully,
When she hums or bends her tendrils playfully,
She is a gazelle in her glance, a bough in her sway.
The gazelle is in a glance, and the branch is in an inclination.
وَأَنْضَرُand the lushest of الَّرْوضِgardens أَضْحَىpassed the morning وَهْوَwhile it was مُصْطَبِحٌtaking a morning drink

And the lushest of gardens passed the morning drinking,
The greenest of gardens became lively at dawn,
And the bough leaned like a drunken drinker.
And the branch leaned like a drunk leaner.
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen الشَّمْسُthe sun مَالَتْinclined نَحْوَtoward مَغْرِبِهَاits setting-place
كَأَنَّهَاas though it were عَاشِقٌa lover يَبْكِيweeps عَلَىover طَلَلِa ruined dwelling
Until, when the sun inclined toward its setting,
Until when the sun inclined toward its sunset,
As though it were a lover weeping over a ruined dwelling,
As if it were a lover crying over ruins.
وَحَجَّبَand veiled اللَّيْلُnight عَنَّاfrom us حُسْنَthe beauty of مَنْظَرهِits appearance

And night hid from us the beauty of the scene,
And the night veiled from us the beauty of its view
With a hanging veil of night's darkness,
With a curtain of darkness fallen down.
لاَappeared (first part of split verb) حَتْappeared (second part of split verb) إِلَيْنَاto us شُمُوسُthe suns of الْحُسْنِbeauty سَاطِعَةًshining

The suns of beauty appeared to us, shining,
Neither do the suns of beauty shine upon us,
With no sky but curtains and canopies.
Nor a sky other than veils and anklets.
وَفِيand in الْوُجُوهِthe faces لَنَاfor us رَوْضٌa garden أَزَاهِرُهُits blossoms

And in their faces we had a garden, its blossoms
And in the faces we have a garden whose flowers
From the cheek's rose or the eyes' narcissus.
Are of a cheek, or narcissus of an eyelid.
وَخَيْرُand the best of مَاwhat ظَفِرَتْsucceeded كَفٌّthe hand of الْمُحِبِّthe lover بِهِin obtaining it

And the best the lover's hand has won
And the best a lover’s palm has obtained
Is wine from saliva, or sweetmeats of kisses.
Is wine from saliva, or transport from kisses.
فَاسْتَغْنِمِso seize الأنْسَcompanionship يَوْماًa day إِنْif ظَفِرْتَyou succeeded بِهِin obtaining it

So seize a day of companionship, if you find it,
So enjoy intimacy a day if you obtain it
In a reign now among the most fortunate of reigns.
In a state that became one of the happiest states.
أَيَّامُthe days of يُوسُفَYusuf أَعْيَادٌfestivals مُجَدَّدَةٌrenewed
وَلَّىbanished عَنِfrom الْخَلْقِmankind فِيهَاduring them الْهَمَّcare يَوْمَthe day وَلِيhe assumed rule
Yusuf's days are festivals ever renewed;
The days of Joseph are renewed feasts
He banished care from mankind in them, the day he assumed rule.
In which cares withdrew from people one day.
وَأَصْبَحَتْand they became كَالرَّبِيعِlike spring الطَّلْقِbright ضَاحِكَةًsmiling
إِذْwhen حَلَّhe alighted فِيهَاin them حُلُولَthe entry of الشَّمْسِthe sun فِيinto الحَمَلِAries
And they became smiling like a bright spring,
And they became like the clear spring, laughing,
When he entered them as the sun enters Aries.
When the sun settled in Aries.
فَسَارَso he proceeded بِالْعَدْلِwith justice فِيin وِرْدٍcoming to water وَفِيand in صَدرِleaving water
وَرَاقَبَand was mindful of اللهَGod فِيin قَوْلٍspeech وَفِيand in عَمَلِdeed
So he proceeded with justice in coming and going,
He proceeded with justice in affection and in the breast,
And was mindful of God in word and deed.
And watched God in saying and in deed.
أَنْوَارُهُhis lights فِيin سَمَاءِthe sky of الْعَدْلِjustice نَيّرَةٌradiant

His lights are radiant in the sky of justice;
Its lights shine in the sky of justice,
They shine forth, and his deeds spread farther than a proverb.
Appearing, and its traces captive of example.
لاَزَالَmay he ever remain فِيin عِزَّةٍglory تَصْفُوgrow clear مَوَارِدُهَاits wellsprings

May he ever remain in glory whose wellsprings are clear,
It continues in glory whose springs are clear,
Granted every hope he longs to attain.
Conveying all that he hopes for of aspiration.
