O star of ill omen, close at hand across the ages!

That tail brought war and ruin.

When we saw you, we confirmed what they had described

to the people of calamities recorded in the books.

As a poet of Tayy said in his poem—

and he is an authority in learning and literature—

and they frightened the people with a dreadful calamity

when the western star with a tail appeared.
