أإخْوانَنا لا تنْسَوا الفضْلَ والعَطْفا

أإخْوانَنا لا تنْسَوا الفضْلَ والعَطْفا

فقدْ كادَ نُورُ الله بالكُفْرِ أنْ يُطْفا

فقدْ كادَ نُورُ الله بالكُفْرِ أنْ يُطْفا

O our brothers, do not forget generosity and compassion.

O brothers, do not forget the favor and kindness

For the light of God has almost been extinguished by unbelief.

For the light of God was almost extinguished by disbelief

وإذْ بلغَ الماءُ الزُّبَى فتدارَكوا

وإذْ بلغَ الماءُ الزُّبَى فتدارَكوا

فقدْ بسَطَ الدّينُ الحَنيفُ لكُمْ كَفّا

فقدْ بسَطَ الدّينُ الحَنيفُ لكُمْ كَفّا

And now that the water has reached the hilltops, come to the rescue,

And when the water reached dangerous levels, you intervened

For the upright faith has stretched out a hand to you.

For the upright religion has provided you with strength

تَحَكّمَ في سُكّانِ أندَلُسَ العِدَى

تَحَكّمَ في سُكّانِ أندَلُسَ العِدَى

فلَهفاً على الإسلامِ ما بينَهُمْ لهْفا

فلَهفاً على الإسلامِ ما بينَهُمْ لهْفا

The enemies have imposed their rule on the inhabitants of al-Andalus.

Oppression took control of the people of Al-Andalus

Alas, alas for Islam in their midst!

Eagerly desiring the destruction of Islam amongst them

وقدْ مُزِجَتْ أمْواهُها بدِمائِها

وقدْ مُزِجَتْ أمْواهُها بدِمائِها

فإنْ ظمِئَتْ لا رِيَّ إلاّ الرّدَى صِرْفا

فإنْ ظمِئَتْ لا رِيَّ إلاّ الرّدَى صِرْفا

And her waters have been mingled with her blood,

Their waters have been mixed with their blood

So if she thirsts, her only draught is undiluted death.

If it was thirsty, there was no watering except with harm

وجاسَتْ جُيوشُ الكُفْرِ بيْنَ خِلالِها

وجاسَتْ جُيوشُ الكُفْرِ بيْنَ خِلالِها

فَلا حافِراً أبْقَتْ علَيْها ولا ظِلْفا

فَلا حافِراً أبْقَتْ علَيْها ولا ظِلْفا

And the armies of unbelief have rampaged through her midst,

The armies of disbelief moved among them

Leaving upon her neither a solid hoof nor a cloven hoof.

Leaving no hoof or trace upon it

أنَوْماً وإغْفاءً علَى سِنَةِ الكَرى

أنَوْماً وإغْفاءً علَى سِنَةِ الكَرى

وما نامَ طرْفٌ في حِماها ولا أغْفى

وما نامَ طرْفٌ في حِماها ولا أغْفى

Do you sleep and doze in slumber's drowsiness,

Sleeping and heedless of the way of fate

While not an eye within her sanctuary has slept or dozed?

No eye among them slept or was oblivious

أحاطَ بِنا الأعْداءُ منْ كلِّ جانِبٍ

أحاطَ بِنا الأعْداءُ منْ كلِّ جانِبٍ

فلا وَزَراً عنْهُمْ وجَدْنا ولا كَهْفا

فلا وَزَراً عنْهُمْ وجَدْنا ولا كَهْفا

The enemies have surrounded us on every side,

The enemies have surrounded us from all sides

So we have found neither a refuge from them nor a cave.

We found no help or refuge from them

ثُغورٌ غدَتْ مثْلَ الثّغورِ ضَواحِكاً

ثُغورٌ غدَتْ مثْلَ الثّغورِ ضَواحِكاً

أقامَ علَيْها الكُفْرُ يرْشُفُها رَشْفا

أقامَ علَيْها الكُفْرُ يرْشُفُها رَشْفا

Frontier strongholds have become like smiling mouths;

The strongholds have become like vulnerable strongholds

Unbelief has settled upon them, sipping at them sip by sip.

Upon which disbelief resides and sips

فمِنْ معْقِلٍ حلّ العَدوُّ عِقالَهُ

فمِنْ معْقِلٍ حلّ العَدوُّ عِقالَهُ

ومِنْ مسْجِدٍ صارَ الضّلالُ بهِ وقْفا

ومِنْ مسْجِدٍ صارَ الضّلالُ بهِ وقْفا

Many a stronghold has had its tether loosened by the enemy,

So the enemy has unpacked in a fortress

And many a mosque where error has become an endowment,

And misguidance took it as a religious endowment

ومِنْ غادَةٍ بكرٍ جلَتْها يدُ الجَلا

ومِنْ غادَةٍ بكرٍ جلَتْها يدُ الجَلا

ولمْ تدْرِ إلا دايَة قطُّ أو سَجْفا

ولمْ تدْرِ إلا دايَة قطُّ أو سَجْفا

And many a tender virgin has been unveiled by exile's hand,

And an unmarried young woman's purity

Though she had never known anything but a wet nurse or a curtain.

Whose hands did not know doll-play or woodcarving

ومِنْ صِبْيَةٍ حُمْرِ الحَواصِلِ أصبَحَتْ

ومِنْ صِبْيَةٍ حُمْرِ الحَواصِلِ أصبَحَتْ

تُقَلِّبُ ذُعْراً بينَ أعْدائِها الطّرْفا

تُقَلِّبُ ذُعْراً بينَ أعْدائِها الطّرْفا

And many children, like red-cropped nestlings, have come to

And a rosy-cheeked girl

Turn their gaze in terror among their enemies.

Who tosses and turns in fear among enemies

ومن نِسْوَةٍ أضحَتْ أيامَى حَواسِراً

ومن نِسْوَةٍ أضحَتْ أيامَى حَواسِراً

تُعايِنُ في أعْوانِها الوَهْنَ والضَّعْفا

تُعايِنُ في أعْوانِها الوَهْنَ والضَّعْفا

And many women are now widowed and bareheaded,

And women who became bereaved, grieved

Seeing frailty and weakness in their helpers.

Witnessing weakness and frailty in their protectors

وسِيلَتُنا الإسْلامُ وهْوَ أُخوّةٌ

وسِيلَتُنا الإسْلامُ وهْوَ أُخوّةٌ

من الملأِ الأعْلَى تُقَرِّبُنا زُلْفى

من الملأِ الأعْلَى تُقَرِّبُنا زُلْفى

Our means of appeal is Islam, and it is a brotherhood

Our means is Islam, it is brotherhood

That draws us close to the highest assembly.

From the Highest Assembly that brings us close

أخَوْفاً وقدْ لُذْنا بِجاهِ مَنِ ارْتَضى

أخَوْفاً وقدْ لُذْنا بِجاهِ مَنِ ارْتَضى

وذُلاً وقدْ عُذْنا بعِزِّ منِ اسْتَصْفَى

وذُلاً وقدْ عُذْنا بعِزِّ منِ اسْتَصْفَى

Are we to fear, though we have sought refuge in the honor of the one He has approved,

Out of fear, though we have taken refuge in the sanctity of the Chosen One

And be abased, though we have sheltered in the might of the one He has chosen?

And humiliation, though we have taken refuge in the might of the Exalted

فهَلْ ناصِرٌ مُسْتَبْصِرٌ في يَقينِه

فهَلْ ناصِرٌ مُسْتَبْصِرٌ في يَقينِه

يُجيزُ منِ اسْتَعْدى ويكْفي منِ اسْتَكفى

يُجيزُ منِ اسْتَعْدى ويكْفي منِ اسْتَكفى

Is there, then, a champion, clear-sighted in his conviction,

Is there then a victor, certain in his certainty

Who grants aid to whoever seeks defense and suffices for whoever seeks support?

Who will avenge the oppressed and suffice the content

ومُسْتَنْجِزٌ فِينا منَ اللهِ وعْدَهُ

ومُسْتَنْجِزٌ فِينا منَ اللهِ وعْدَهُ

فلا نكْثَ في وعْدِ الإلاهِ ولا خُلْفا

فلا نكْثَ في وعْدِ الإلاهِ ولا خُلْفا

And one who seeks from God the fulfillment of His promise for us?

And one who fulfills for us God's promise

For God's promise admits neither breach nor failure.

No breach of the promise of God or violation

وهلْ بائِعٌ فينا منَ اللهِ نفْسَهُ

وهلْ بائِعٌ فينا منَ اللهِ نفْسَهُ

فلا مُشْتَرٍ أوْلَى منَ اللهِ أو أوْفَى

فلا مُشْتَرٍ أوْلَى منَ اللهِ أو أوْفَى

And is there one who will sell himself to God for our sake?

Is there among you a seller of himself for God

For no buyer is worthier than God, or more faithful.

No purchaser worthier than God or more faithful

أفي اللهِ شكّ بعْدَما وضَحَ الهُدَى

أفي اللهِ شكّ بعْدَما وضَحَ الهُدَى

وكيْفَ لضَوْءِ الصُبْحِ في الأفْقِ أنْ يَخْفَى

وكيْفَ لضَوْءِ الصُبْحِ في الأفْقِ أنْ يَخْفَى

Is there doubt about God after guidance has become clear?

Is there doubt in God after the guidance has become clear

And how could dawn's light on the horizon be hidden?

And how can the light of dawn in the horizon be hidden

وكيفَ يَعيثُ الكُفْرُ فينا ودونَنا

وكيفَ يَعيثُ الكُفْرُ فينا ودونَنا

قَبائِلُ منكُم تُعْجِزُ الحصْرَ والوصْفا

قَبائِلُ منكُم تُعْجِزُ الحصْرَ والوصْفا

And how can unbelief ravage us, when before us stand

And how can disbelief ravage us and around us

Tribes of yours that defy counting and description?

When tribes among you outnumber counting or description

غُيوثُ نَوالٍ كلّما سُئِلُوا النّوى

غُيوثُ نَوالٍ كلّما سُئِلُوا النّوى

لُيوثٌ نِزالٍ كلّما حضَروا الزّحْفا

لُيوثٌ نِزالٍ كلّما حضَروا الزّحْفا

Showers of bounty whenever they are asked for date pits,

Helpers of resolve, whenever they are asked for intention

Lions in combat whenever they join the battle.

Lions of assault, whenever they attend to battle

إذا كتَبَتْ يوْماً فأقلامُها القَنا

إذا كتَبَتْ يوْماً فأقلامُها القَنا

وإنْ أرسَلَتْ يوْماً كانَتْ صَفائِحُها الصُّحْفا

وإنْ أرسَلَتْ يوْماً كانَتْ صَفائِحُها الصُّحْفا

When they write one day, their pens are spears,

If one day they draw their pens, their scripts

And if they ever send a message, their sword blades are the pages.

Or if one day they dispatch, their pages would be scriptures

فَقوموا برَسْمِ الحقِّ فِيها فقَدْ عَفا

فَقوموا برَسْمِ الحقِّ فِيها فقَدْ عَفا

وهُبّوا لنَصْرِ الدّينِ فيها فقدْ أشْفَى

وهُبّوا لنَصْرِ الدّينِ فيها فقدْ أشْفَى

So restore truth's imprint within her, for it has faded,

So stand for the truth in them, for it has excelled

And rise to the faith's defense within her, for it is on the brink.

And give for the victory of the religion, for it has healed

وها نحْنُ قدْ لُذْنا بعِزِّ حِماكُمُ

وها نحْنُ قدْ لُذْنا بعِزِّ حِماكُمُ

ونَرْجو منَ اللهِ الإدالَةَ واللُّطْفا

ونَرْجو منَ اللهِ الإدالَةَ واللُّطْفا

And here we are, having sought refuge in the might of your sanctuary,

And here we are, having taken refuge in your might

And we hope from God for a favorable turn of fortune and grace.
