O messenger of the east breeze, may I be your ransom—convey

the intensity of my longing, if you can, and my passion.

And carry toward the domes a greeting

whose fragrance puts the flowers of Najd to shame.

Then kiss my master's palm on my behalf,

and speak of what I repeat and reveal.

And behold that beauty with my eye,

and tread upon that dust with my cheek.

And be gentle, for it is only a whispered confidence

that longing has poured out between a master and a servant.
