O lovers of what is not the One, the Unique, the Everlasting,

Your madness, by God, has baffled the healer.

You have gone mad for what perishes, and bitter anguish remains,

tormenting a yearning heart after separation

and binding to bodies a soul whose life lies

in bartering bodies for the exalted essence.

So she has neither gained what she clung to,

nor does any capital that once benefited her remain.

Separation, a grave, severance, and darkness—

Protect me from being far from attaining happiness, O Protector.

It is as though I see her, after the veil has been lifted,

felled by sorrows, seared by longings.

She wrings her hands, tethered by a cord,

bound fast with a leather thong beneath seven layers.

    فذلِكَ سُمٌ لا يُداوِيَ بتَرْياقِ

    So do not, in error, feed her poison in honey;

for that is a poison no antidote can cure.

With what she has earned, she journeys to her resting place,

either with sufficient abundance or in destitution.

And after separation she has no recourse,

save remorse that scatters tears from the corners of her eyes.

And if her sorrow's reach had a limit,

grief would be light, between swift trotting and rapid striding.

So strive earnestly, for the matter is serious, and gird yourselves

by virtue of self-discipline or by reforming character.

    وشِيموا بِها للحَقِّ لمْحَةَ إشْراقِ

    And do not give her free rein in the senses;

and watch through her for a glimpse of the Truth's radiance.

And gently instill meaning in her, and awaken

her inward sight after sleep and deep immersion.

And whenever she awakens, open for her reflection

the leaves of doors and the locks that seal them.

And explain the fate of the perishable, and deal gently

with her ailing traits, with the gentleness of compassion.

Then, if she becomes intoxicated and in her intoxication aspires

to the essence of the draught and knowledge of the cupbearer,

prolong her roaming through the garden of beauty,

until ecstasy stands within her, firm on its feet.

And let the blaze of longing carry her across the desert wastes,

toward ecstasy, on a night-journey of symbols and tastes.

Then she has only to set down her saddlebags

    at the abode of manifestation and witnessing, without restriction;

and when she beholds, she vanishes from awareness of her own beholding,

and the perishable has perished, and the Everlasting remains.

There she finds life whose shades grow serene,

and delights in shimmering water from the spring of life.

    فلا تَطرُدِ السُؤّالَ يا خيْرَ رَزّاقِ

    And the apportionment of sustenance is nothing but a marvel;

so do not turn the beggars away, O best of providers.
