    O friend, do not weep for a time of union that passed

    from us, fondly remembered, nor for desires and homelands.

    وَكُلُّ صَعْبٍ إِذَا هَوَّنْتَهُ هَانَا

    Take it lightly, for complaining is of no use;

    and every hardship grows easy when you make it so.

    And look at the garden when, keen-edged, there blew

    the wind's vanguard—how it swayed and grew resplendent.

    And the water, from the recent fall of dew within it, unsheathed

    a naked sword from the unsheathed stream.

    And Quzah strung the bow across its horizons,

    shooting, then clothing rivers and pools in armor.

    أَدْمَى بِصَائِبِها وَرْداً وَنُعْمَاناً

    And the cloud loosed arrows from its rainclouds;

    with their sure strikes, it bloodied roses and anemones.

    So bring it, shining like a ray of the sun,

    as though the cup held rubies and pure gold.

    وَبُحْ بِسِرِّ الْهَوَى لاَ تُبْقِ كِتْمَانَا

    And drink to the strings' melody, taking your morning draught;

    and reveal love's secret—leave nothing concealed.

    And merrily spur the steeds of youth toward revelry,

    when you find a field for revelry's horses.

    And do not squander chances for delight; indeed, we have

    a generous Lord who pardons sin in forgiveness.

    And how could we fear a calamity that befell us

    one day, while Yusuf, after God, is our patron?
