يَاسَاكِنِيO dwellers of مَرْفَأَthe harbor الشَّوَانِيthe galleys
شَوْقِيَmy longing مِنْbecause of بُعْدِكُمْyour absence شَوَانِيhas roasted me
O dwellers in the harbor of galleys,
O dweller of the harbors of passion
My longing in your absence has roasted me.
My passion for you from afar impassions me
وَلاَعِجُand the searing pang الشَّوْقِof longing قَدْindeed هَوَانِيhas laid me low
مِنْbecause of بُعْدِكُمْyour absence فَاقْتَضَىand so it demanded هَوَانِيmy abasement
And the searing pang of longing has indeed laid me low;
And my fervent longing weakened me
Because of your absence, it has thus demanded my abasement,
Your distance made me long for you intensely
كأَنَّهُas though it were مَالِكٌmaster of عِنَانِيmy reins
اُنْمُوذَجٌa likeness مِنْof أَبِيAbu عِنَانِInan
As though it were master of my reins—
As if it held my reins firmly
A likeness of Abu Inan.
An example from Abi Inan
لَقَدْindeed كَفَانِيhas sufficed me لَقَدْindeed كَفَانِيhas sufficed me
بَاقِيwhat remains of ذَماًa remnant of life ذَاهِبٍfading كَفَانِيhas sufficed me
I have indeed had enough; I have indeed had enough.
Indeed it sufficed me, indeed it sufficed me
What remains of a fading breath of life is enough for me.
The rest of my blame and loss sufficed me
مُنُّواbestow favor عَلَىupon الْجَوْفِthe hollow within بِالأَمَانِيwith hopes
فَأَنْتُمُfor you are جُمْلَةُthe sum of الأَمَانِيthe hopes
Bestow hopes upon the hollow within,
Wish in your hearts for safety
For you are the sum of all hopes.
For you are all my wishes
