أَبَاO father of مَالِكٍMalik أَنْتَyou نَجْلُthe scion of الْمُلُوكِkings
غُيُوثِlife-giving rains النَّدَىgenerosity وَلُيُوثِand lions النِّزَالِbattle
O Abu Malik, you are a scion of kings,
O Abu Malik, you are the son of kings,
Rains of bounty and lions of battle.
The succor of dew and the lion of battle,
وَمِثْلُكَand one like you يَرْتَاحُdelights لِلْمَكْرُمَاتِin noble deeds
وَمَاand not لَكَfor you بَيْنَamong الْوَرَىhumankind مِنْany مِثَالِequal
And one like you delights in noble deeds,
And the like of you finds comfort in honors,
And among humankind you have no equal.
With no equal amongst mankind.
عَزِيزٌgrievous بِأَنْفِسِنَاto our souls أَنْthat نَرَىwe see
رِكَابَكَyour mounts مُؤُذِنَةًannouncing بِارْتِحَالِof departure
It grieves our souls to see
It brings us joy to see
Your mounts announcing departure.
Your departure, telling of your leaving,
وَقَدْand indeed خَبَرَتْthey have known مِنْكَfrom you خُلْقَاًa character جَمِيلاًbeautiful
أَنَافَrose high عَلَىabove دَرَجَاتِthe ranks of الْكَمَالِperfection
For our souls have known in you a beautiful character
And we have known noble manners from you,
That rose above the ranks of perfection,
Rising above the ranks of perfection.
وَفَازَتْand they gained لَدَيْكَin your presence بِسَاعَاتِwith hours of أُنْسٍcompanionship
كَمَاjust as زَارَvisited فِيin اللَّيْلِthe night طَيْفُa phantom الْخَيَالِimagination
And gained in your presence hours of companionship,
And in your company it has won hours of companionship,
Like a phantom of fancy visiting by night.
As the specter of imagination came on a night visit.
وَلَوْلاَand were it not for تَعَلُّلُنَاour consoling ourselves أَنَّنَاthat we
نَزُورُكَwe visit you فَوْقَupon بِسَاطِthe carpet of الْجَلاَلِmajesty
And were it not for our comforting hope that we
And were it not for our excuse that we
Will visit you upon the carpet of majesty,
Visit you atop the rug of glory,
وَنَبْلُغُand we attain فِيْكَthrough you الَّذِيwhat نَبْتَغِيwe seek
وَذَاكَand that عَلَىfor اللَّهِGod سَهْلُeasy الْمَنَالِattainment
And through you attain what we seek—
And attain in you what we seek,
And that is easy for God to bring about—
And that is easy to obtain from God,
لَمَاwould not have فَتَرتْfound relief أَنْفُسٌsouls مِنْfrom أَسىًsorrow
Our souls would have found no respite from sorrow,
Never would souls cease from sorrow,
Nor would tears have ceased to stream.
Nor tears cease spilling forth.
تَلقَّتْكَmay greet you حَيْثُwherever احْتَللْتَyou settle السُّعُودُgood fortune
وَكَانَand may be لَكَfor you اللَّهُGod فِيin كُلِّevery حَالِcircumstance
May good fortune greet you wherever you settle,
You met it where good fortune has settled,
And may God stand by you in every circumstance.
And God was with you in every state.
