Nothing has ruined souls but hope.
Nothing ruins souls like false hopes do,
And it is a delusion on which no action rests.
Illusions, with no basis in reason or action,

إِلاَّbut قَدِalready انْقَضَىhas elapsed عَلَيْهَاover it أَجَلُan allotted span
There is no living soul upon the face of the earth
No living soul remains on earth
but an allotted span has already passed over it.
Whose time has not already come and gone.
لَوْif أَنَّهُمْthat they مِنْfrom غَيْرِهَاother than it قَدْalready كُوِّنُواthey were formed

Had they been formed from something other than earth,
Had they been made of anything else,
the plain and the mountain would have been filled with them.
The valleys and mountains would be filled with them.

There is nothing there but a morsel made ready
We're nothing but morsels readied
for death, who is the impatient eater.
For death, the hasty devourer.
وَالْوَعْدُand the promise حَقٌّtrue وَالْوَرَىand humankind فِيin غفْلَةٍheedlessness
قَدْindeed خُودِعُواthey were deceived بِعَاجِلٍby the fleeting present وَضُلِّلُواand they were led astray
And the promise is true, while humankind is heedless.
The promise is true, though the world's oblivious,
They have been deceived by the fleeting present and led astray.
Deceived by the fleeting, led astray.
أَيْنَwhere الَّذِينَthose who شَيَّدُواthey built high وَاغْتَرَسُواand they planted
وَمَهَّدُواand they made ready وَافْتَرَشُواand they spread bedding وَظَلَّلُواand they provided shade
Where are those who built high and planted,
Where are those who built and planted,
and prepared resting places, spread bedding, and provided shade?
Paved and carpeted and shaded?
أَيْنَwhere ذَوُواthose possessing الرَّاحَاتِcomforts زَادَتْincreased حَسْرَةًsorrow

Where are those who enjoyed comforts that deepened their sorrow
As their longing intensified
when they were led to the dust and departed?
When they were laid in the dust and transported.
لَمْdid not تَدْفَعِward off الأَحْبَابُthe loved ones عَنْهُمْfrom them غَيْرَexcept أَنْthat

Their loved ones could not protect them, but only
Nothing could protect them except
weep over their parting and wail.
Their loved ones weeping and wailing over their loss.
اللَّهَGod فِيconcerning نَفْسِكَyour soul أَوْلَىmost deserving مَنْthe one لَهُfor whom
ذَخَرْتَyou have stored up نُصْحاًcounsel وَعِتَاباًand rebuke يَقْبَلُit accepts
For God's sake, care for your soul, the one most deserving of
God, in your soul, is worthier of
the counsel you have saved and the rebuke it accepts.
The advice and rebuke you've stored for Him that He accepts.
لاَdo not تَتْرُكَنْهَاever leave it فِيin عَمىًblindness وَحَيْرَةٍand bewilderment

Do not leave it in blindness and bewilderment,
Don't abandon it blinded and confused
heedless of the terror of what lies before it.
By the enormity of what's ahead that you overlook.
حَقِّرْbelittle لَهَاfor it الْفَانِيthe perishable وَحَاوِلْand seek زُهْدَهَاits detachment

Make the perishable seem worthless to it, and seek its detachment,
Make little of this world and try to reject it,
and stir its longing for what it will face.
And make it hope for what it will encounter.
وَفِدْand go إِلَىto اللَّهِGod بِهَاwith it مُضْطَرَّةin desperate need
حَتَّىuntil تَرَىyou see السَّيْرَthe journey عَلَيْهَاfor it يَسْهُلُgrows easy
And go to God with it in desperate need,
Take refuge in God, compelled,
until you see the journey grow easy for it.
Until the journey becomes easy.
هُوَit is الْفَنَاءُpassing away وَالْبَقَاءُand abiding بَعْدَهُafter it
وَاللَّهُand God عَنْabout حِكْمَتِهِHis wisdom لاَnot يُسْأَلُis questioned
It is passing away, and abiding thereafter;
That is annihilation and, after it, subsistence.
and God is not questioned about His wisdom.
God is not questioned concerning His wisdom.
يَاO قُرَّةَdelight الْعَيْنِof the eye وَيَاand O حَسْرَتَهَاits sorrow
يَوْمَon the day يُوَفَّىare repaid in full النَّاسُthe people مَاwhat قَدْalready عَمِلُواthey have done
O delight of the eye, and O its sorrow,
O, delight of the eye and source of regret
on the day people are repaid in full for what they have done.
The day all people are recompensed for what they have done.
