جَاءَتْshe came مُعَذِّبَتِيmy tormentress فِيin غَيْهَبِdeep darkness الغَسَقِdusk
كَأنَّهَاas though she were الكَوْكَبُthe star الدُرِيُّpearl-bright فِيin الأُفُقِthe horizon
My tormentress came in the deep darkness of dusk,
As though she were the pearl-bright star on the horizon.
فَقُلْتُso I said نَوَّرْتِنِيyou brought me light يَاO خَيْرَbest زَائِرَةٍfemale visitor
أمَاdid not? خَشِيتِyou feared مِنَof الحُرَّاسِthe guards فِيin الطُّرُقِthe roads
So I said, “You have brought me light, O best of visitors!
Did you not fear the guards along the roads?”
فَجَاوَبَتْنِيthen she answered me وَwhile دَمْعُtears العَيْنِthe eye يَسْبِقُهَاprecede her
مَنْwhoever يَرْكَبِsails upon البَحْرَthe sea لاnot يَخْشَىfears مِنَof الغَرَقِdrowning
Then she answered me, with tears from her eyes preceding her:
“Whoever sails the sea does not fear drowning.”
فَقلتُthen I said هذيthese أحاديثٌtales ملفّقةٌconcocted
موضوعةٌmade up قدْalready أتتْhave come منْfrom قولِspeech مُختَلقِinvented
Then I said, “These are concocted tales,
Made up, having come from invented speech.”
قالتْshe said وحقِّby the sanctity of عيونيmy eyes عزَّhow mighty منْas قَسَمٍan oath

She said, “By the sanctity of my eyes—what a mighty oath!—
And by the pearls of lingering life upon my brow,
إنّيindeed I أحِبُّكَlove you حباًa love لاno نفاذَend لهُto it
ماas long as دامَremains فيin مُهجتيmy heart شيءٌsomething منَof الرَّمَقِlingering life
Indeed, I love you with a love that knows no end,
So long as a trace of life remains in my heart.”
فقمتُthen I rose ولْهانَfrantic with love منْfrom وجديmy longing أقبّلُهاI kiss her
زِحْتُI drew aside اللثامَthe veil رأيتُI saw البدرَthe full moon مُعْتَنَقِembraced
Then I rose, frantic with my longing, to kiss her.
I drew aside the veil and saw the full moon held in an embrace.
قبّلتُهاI kissed her قبّلتنيshe kissed me وهيwhile she قائلةٌsaying
قبلتَyou kissed فايَmy mouth فلاso do not تبخلْbe stingy علىtoward عُنقيmy neck

I kissed her; she kissed me, saying:
“You kissed my mouth; so do not be sparing with my neck.”

I said, “Embracing is forbidden under our religious law.”
She said, “O my master, then lay it upon my neck.”
