موْلايَmy lord مُذْsince بَعُدَتْgrew distant دِياريmy dwellings لاdo not تَسَلْask
عنْabout طولِlength لَيْليmy night وارْتِقابِand awaiting صَباحيmy dawn
My lord, since my home grew distant, do not ask
My Master, since I left my home I do not ask
about my long night and my waiting for dawn.
About the length of my nights or the coming of dawn.
جَرَحَwounded البِعادُseparation فُؤادَthe heart عَبْدِكَyour servant فهْوَso he is منْon
أجْلِaccount of التّرَحُّلِdeparture عنْكَfrom you رَهْنُa captive جِراحِwounds
Separation wounded your servant's heart; because
Separation has wounded the heart of Your servant, so it is
of parting from you, he is held captive by wounds.
For leaving You that my heart bleeds in sorrow.
لمْdid not يَلْقَfind بعْدَكَafter you ماwhat يَلَذُّdelights لناظِريto my eye
منْin حُسْنِbeauty أرْجاءٍlandscapes وزَهْرِand flowers بِطاحِbroad plains
In your absence, he has found nothing to delight my eye
Since leaving You my eyes find no beauty in any place,
in the beauty of landscapes and the flowers of broad plains.
No lovely meadow or garden in bloom.
وبَقيتُand I remained جِسْماًa body دونَwithout روحٍa soul لاdo not تَسَلْask
عنْabout حالِthe condition أجْسامٍbodies بِلاwithout أرْواحِsouls
And I remained a body without a soul; do not ask
I remain a body without a soul, do not ask
about the condition of bodies without souls.
About the state of bodies without breath.
وكأنّنيand as though I مُذْsince غابَvanished وجْهُكَyour face ذاهِبٌtraveling
فيin اللّيلَةِthe night الظّلماpitch-dark بِلاwithout مِصْباحِa lamp
And since your face vanished, it is as though I were traveling
Since Your face disappeared I wander
through the pitch-dark night without a lamp.
In the dark night with no lamp to guide me.
والآنَand now حينَwhen قرُبتُI drew near منْكَto you فآنَسَتْso it found comfort
نَفْسيmy soul وعادَتْand returned غَضّةًfresh أفْراحيmy joys
And now that I have drawn near to you, solace has filled
But now that I come near to You, my soul is comforted
my soul, and my joys have returned fresh once more.
And my joys return fresh once more.
لوْif كانَwere ياO مَوْلايَmy lord أمْريmy affairs فيin يَديmy hand
يوماًone day لطِرْتُthen I would fly إليْكَto you دونَwithout جَناحِa wing
If, my lord, my affairs were in my hands
If my affairs were in my hands, My Master,
for a day, I would fly to you without a wing.
I would fly to You in an instant without wings.
