In a barren, desolate abode, then among enemies
Possessed of evils, passions, and terrors.
Of evil, whims, and terrors

Think not people are sleeping, their eyes
Gaze toward you; treat them graciously.
Gaze to You, so treat them generally

And set a cunning man's snares to catch them.
And set up traps for their game, deceptive snares

May Your side be safe from saying and saying again

Take on part of the task; be moderate and come to your senses,
Take a portion of the matter and be moderate, beware
And look, for your own sake, to an army and wealth.
And consider for Yourself an army and wealth

And be wary; do not overlook the plot of one
And be cautious, neglect not the plots of one
Who draws near to you and intends an assassin's deadly attack.
Who comes near to You with intent to kill by treachery

And you—the All-Merciful has tried you, testing you,
You have been tested by the Merciful, examining
So that He may see you act as a guardian and protector.
To see from You the deed of the Perfect Preserver

No hope remains for Islam after You
So protect their community in a land of poverty.
Except to put its group in the abode of decline

Their affairs are ruined; their frontier strongholds are demolished.
Their affairs are lost, their borders subdued
So attend to them as a helper in this plight.
So look out for them a supporter in this state

You reckoned your task easy, something you could shoulder alone;
You reckoned the matter easy to undertake
God's necklace—know this—is laden with burdens.
The necklace of God, know, one of burdens

None undertakes it but the trusted brother
Who never abandons diligence, at home or on the road.
Who does not neglect striving whether settled or wandering

So attend to yourself and Islam while there is time,
So look out for Yourself and Islam in respite
And deal with God measure for measure.
And treat God with the scale, with the scale

And the matter is grave; gird yourself and prepare for it.
And the matter is serious, so roll up and prepare for it
Do not be deceived by fables and hopes.
Be not fooled by illusions and hopes

I have exhausted my effort with what He has placed in my body
And in my hereafter, and in my faith and my children.
And my livelihood, religion, and children

Nothing remains from me, I have done
Counsel of love and sincerity is most fitting for me.
The advice of affection and utmost sincerity is best for me
