مَوْلاَيَmy lord خَمْسٌfive تَوَلَّتْhave passed
مَوْلاَيَ خَمْسٌ تَوَلَّتْ
وَبالْمُنَىand with hopes قَدْindeed تَجَلَّتْshone forth
وَبالْمُنَى قَدْ تَجَلَّتْ
My lord, five have passed,
My Master, five have passed
and have shone with hopes.
And in Minā have appeared
وَأَدْمُعُand tears الشَّوْقِof longing خَوْفاًin fear
وَأَدْمُعُ الشَّوْقِ خَوْفاً
مِنَof الْفِرَاقِparting اسْتَهَلَّتْpoured forth
مِنَ الْفِرَاقِ اسْتَهَلَّتْ
And tears of longing, in fear
Tears of longing out of fear
of parting, poured forth.
Of separation have streamed
سَارَتْjourneyed on وَكَمْand how much مِنْof وَلُوعٍpassion
سَارَتْ وَكَمْ مِنْ وَلُوعٍ
بَيْنَbetween الْجَوَانِحِthe ribs خَلَّتْleft behind
بَيْنَ الْجَوَانِحِ خَلَّتْ
They journeyed on—and how much passion
It marched, and how much anguish
they left between the ribs!
In my heart it left
والْهَزْلُand jest مَسْرَحُa playground نَفْسٍa soul
والْهَزْلُ مَسْرَحُ نَفْسٍ
عَوَائِدَthe habits الْجِدِّof seriousness مَلَّتْgrew weary of
عَوَائِدَ الْجِدِّ مَلَّتْ
And jest is a playground for a soul
Jesting became a stage for the soul
weary of the habits of seriousness.
Whose habits of seriousness it ruined
تَعَشَّقَتْfell in love بِظِلاَلٍwith shadows
تَعَشَّقَتْ بِظِلاَلٍ
حَارَتْgrew bewildered لَدَيْهَاin their presence وَضَلَّتْand went astray
حَارَتْ لَدَيْهَا وَضَلَّتْ
It fell in love with shadows,
It fell in love with shadows
grew bewildered before them, and went astray.
It became confused by them and went astray
حَتَّىuntil إِذَاwhen الشَّمْسُthe sun لاَحَتْshone forth
حَتَّى إِذَا الشَّمْسُ لاَحَتْ
أَنْوَارُهَاits rays وَتَجَلَّتْand stood revealed
أَنْوَارُهَا وَتَجَلَّتْ
Until, when the sun shone forth
Until when the sun rose
with its rays and stood revealed,
Its lights manifested and shone
بَدَاappeared لَهَاto it الْحَقُّthe truth حَقّاًas truth
بَدَا لَهَا الْحَقُّ حَقّاً
فَزَايَلَتْهُso it forsook it وَزَلَّتْand stumbled
فَزَايَلَتْهُ وَزَلَّتْ
truth appeared to it as truth,
The truth appeared to it as truth
so it forsook it and stumbled.
So it parted from it and slipped
وَهَالَهَاand appalled it مِنْfrom نُفُوسٍsouls
وَهَالَهَا مِنْ نُفُوسٍ
قَدْindeed أَقْبَلَتْcame forward ثُمَّthen وَلَّتْturned away
قَدْ أَقْبَلَتْ ثُمَّ وَلَّتْ
And it was appalled by souls
And it was awed by souls
that had come forward, then turned away.
That had come then turned away
إِذَاwhen الْقُيُودُthe fetters اعْتَرَتْهَاbeset them
إِذَا الْقُيُودُ اعْتَرَتْهَا
هَانَتْbecame lowly وَخَسَّتْand became base وَذَلَّتْand became abased
هَانَتْ وَخَسَّتْ وَذَلَّتْ
When fetters beset them,
When shackles constrained it
they grow lowly, base, and abased.
It became base, despised and humiliated
إِنْif يُرفَعِis lifted الْقَيْدُthe fetter عَنْهَاfrom them
إِنْ يُرفَعِ الْقَيْدُ عَنْهَا
عَلَتْrose وَعَزَّتْand grew mighty وَجَلَّتْand became exalted
عَلَتْ وَعَزَّتْ وَجَلَّتْ
If the fetter is lifted from them,
If the shackle is lifted from it
they rise, grow mighty, and become exalted.
It rose up, became mighty and exalted
