بنَفْسي حالِكٌ شِبْهُ السُّوَيْدا
لذَلِكَfor that reason ماindeed (emphatic particle) يَحِنُّlongs لهُfor him الفُؤادُthe heart
لذَلِكَ ما يَحِنُّ لهُ الفُؤادُ
My life for a pitch-dark one, like the heart’s black core!
My soul is like one afflicted with black bile,
That is why the heart indeed longs for him.
Therefore the heart cannot find comfort.
أُطيلُI prolong لهُtoward him الْتِفاتيmy turning to look والتِماحيand my glancing
أُطيلُ لهُ الْتِفاتي والتِماحي
لأنّbecause العَيْنَthe eye ينْفَعُهاbenefits it السّوادُblackness
لأنّ العَيْنَ ينْفَعُها السّوادُ
I look his way and cast him glances at length,
I give it my full attention and consideration,
For blackness benefits the eye.
For the eye finds darkness beneficial.
