لَكَfor you اللهُGod فِيمَاin what تَنْتَحِيهِyou pursue it وَمَاand what تَقْضِيyou decree
فَأَنْتَfor you الَّذِيthe one who أَقْرَضْتَهُyou lent Him أَحْسَنَthe finest الْقَرْضِthe loan
May God be with you in what you pursue and what you decree.
God is with you in what you choose and decree
For you are the one who lent Him the finest loan.
You who lent most generously when others would not
وَأَنْتَand you الَّذِيthe one who أَحْيَيْتَyou revived شِرْعَةَthe law of دِينِهِHis faith
وَقَدْand indeed رُفِضَتْwere rejected أَحْكَمُهَاits firmest precepts أَيَّمَاutter رَفْضِrejection
And you are the one who revived the law of His faith,
You who revived the law of His religion
Though its firmest precepts had been utterly rejected.
Though most of its rules were neglected and lost
وَلَوْلاَكَand but for you لَمْwould not تَنْهَلَّpour forth بِالغَيْثِwith rain ديمَةٌa gentle raincloud
وَلَمْand would not تَرْفُلِsway in flowing robes الأَغْصَانُthe branches فِيin الْوَرَقِthe leaves الْغَضِّtender
But for you, no gentle raincloud would have poured forth rain,
Without you, no meadows would fill with rain
Nor would the branches have swayed in robes of tender leaves.
No boughs would blossom with tender new leaves
وَلاَand not قَرَّrested قَلْبٌa heart فِيin قَرَارِthe hollow of ضُلُوعِهِits ribs
وَلَمْand would not تَعْرِفِknow الأَجْفَانُthe eyelids مَاwhat لذَّةُthe delight of الغَمْضِclosing the eyes
Nor would a heart have rested in the hollow of its ribs,
No heart would find peace within a warm chest
Nor would eyelids have known how sweet it is to close.
No eyelid would know the sweetness of rest
وَلَمَّاand when أَبَىrefused الأَعدَاءُthe enemies إِلاَّexcept لَجَاجَةًobstinacy
نَهَضْتَyou rose بِأَمْرِat the command of اللهِGod أَحْسَنَthe finest مَاemphatic particle نَهْضِrising
And when the enemies insisted on obstinacy alone,
And when enemies persisted in their defiance
You rose at God's command in the noblest manner,
You rose at God's command to bring them to heel
مُقِيماًfulfilling بِمَاin what اسْتَرعَاكَHe entrusted to your care فَرْضَthe duty of جِهَادِهِمْfighting them
وَلَمْand did not تَأَلُfall short فِيin نَدْبِsummoning إِلَيْهِto it وَفِيand in حَضِّexhortation
Fulfilling, under the charge He entrusted to you, the duty of fighting them.
Upholding your sacred obligation to smite them
And you spared no effort in calling others to it and exhorting them.
Relentlessly summoning others to join in the fight
وَأَعْدَدْتَand you prepared مِنْfrom غُرِّthe white-blazed الْجِيَادِsteeds صَوَافِناpoised on three legs
مُطَهَّمَةًwell-formed مِنْof كُلِّevery أَجْرَدsleek-coated steed منقَضِّswooping down
And from white-blazed steeds you readied horses poised on three legs,
You readied steeds from the noblest breed
Well-formed, each a sleek-coated steed swooping down.
Their bridles ring true with no jangle or clink
يَشِفُّis translucent حِجَابُthe veil النَّقْعِof dust عَنْto reveal قَسَمَاتِهَاtheir features
كَمَاjust as شَفَّwas translucent جَهْمُthe dark face السُّحْبِof the clouds عَنْto reveal بَارِقِa glint الوَمْضِof lightning
The veil of dust lets their features show through,
The blankets upon them gleam bright, freshly woven
As the dark face of clouds revealed a glint of lightning.
As lightning illuminates the gloom before night
وَمَاand nothing رَاعَterrified مَلْكَthe king الرُّومِof the Romans إِلاَّexcept طُلُوعُهَاtheir appearance
سَوَابِحَswimming تُزْجِيَهاdrive them onward رِيَاحٌwinds مِنَfrom الرَّكْضِgalloping
And nothing terrified the king of the Romans but their appearance,
Rome's empire was shattered at their first charge
Swimming along, driven onward by winds born of their galloping.
The wind itself racing behind them to push
وَنَادىَand cried out لِسَانُthe tongue الفَتْحِof victory فِيin عَرَصَاتِهِمْtheir courtyards
كَذَلِكَthus مَكَّنَاWe established لِيُوسُفَfor Yusuf فِيin الأَرْضِthe land
And the tongue of victory cried out in their courtyards:
Victory's tongue cried out in their battlefields
“Thus We established Yusuf in the land.”
Thus did We empower Joseph in the land
