May a streaming, pouring cloud water their dwelling,
The clouds rained generously on their homes
and may those hills and sandy tracts never grow barren.
And those meadows did not dry up or wither.
يَنوبُtakes the place عنِof الأجْفانِthe eyelids فيin عَرَصاتِهاits open grounds

It takes the place of eyelids in its open grounds
When one cloud departs, another follows
when their ceaseless raincloud grows weary.
Watering their valleys in succession.

And may my days there live again, when life was gentle,
My pledge to it in the days of blissful life
fresh, and the garden of youth was ripe.
When the spring of youth was blossoming.

We halted the caravan there for a day, and the next,
We stopped over it one day and the next
and a third day; a fourth demanded we move on.
And a third day before our journey continued.
نُعَفِّرُwe rub in dust فيin الآثارِthe traces حُرَّthe tender surfaces خُدودِناof our cheeks

We rubbed our tender cheeks in the dust of the traces,
We sniff the ruins, our cheeks rubbing them,
and lamented to the ruins what separation does.
And complain of separation to the remnants.

How often those hills there have told on our behalf
How many tales of woe have those meadows
tales of lament, strung together by tears.
Heard from us as tears flowed copiously!

O our old haunts, whose beauty separation has erased,
Our covenants with the past that erased your beauty,
I wonder: will your nights of companionship return?
Will the nights of intimacy return from you?
ويَسْكُنُand grows still قلْبٌa heart منْfrom بِعادِكِdistance from you خافِقٌpounding

And will a heart pounding at your absence grow still,
A heart far from you flutters anxiously
and an eyelid weeping at parting from you cease its tears?
And an eye sheds tears in separation from you.
يَميناًan oath بعَهْدِby the days القُرْبِof nearness فيكِin you إذِwhen الهَوىlove

قَشيباًfresh وإذْand when شمْلَthe company الأحبّةِof loved ones جامِعُgathering
I swear by the days of nearness in you, when love
In your nearness, life was pleasant; in your absence,
was fresh, and when it gathered the company of loved ones:
Grey hairs grew though friends stayed together.
لَمَاsurely not خامَرَhas entered السَّلْوانُconsolation بعْدُyet قُلوبَناour hearts

ولاand not عرَفَتْhave known مِنّاfrom us الجُنوبَthe sides المَضاجعُthe beds
consolation has not yet entered our hearts,
When indifference crept into our hearts
nor have beds known our sides.
And the beloved ones ceased their tossing and turning.
وإنّاand indeed we لَيَعْروناsurely assails us إليْكِtoward you تَشَوُّقٌa longing

And longing for you indeed assails us
But we came from the gardens of the Abode
when flashing lightning appears from your mountain passes.
With pavements laid out for the successful.
ومِنْand among عجَبٍwonders أنْthat خانَناbetrayed us فيكِregarding you عزْمُناour resolve

And it is a wonder that our resolve has failed us over you,
Our sights are fixed on any beautiful scene
for neither is the old bond forgotten, nor is the encampment far.
Pleasing to the ears and the eyes.
وماand not إنْat all تَنَكَّبْناwe turned aside from الوَفاءَfidelity طَريقَةًas a path

ولاnor برِحَتْhave ceased تَحْنوto bend tenderly علَيْهِover it الأضالِعُthe ribs
We have not turned from fidelity as our path,
Whoever rules this kingdom will not leave it
nor have our ribs ceased to embrace it tenderly.
Nor will any rival wrest it from him.
ولكِنّناbut we جِئْناcame to منَof الأرْضِthe earth جنّةًa paradise

But we have reached a paradise on earth,
We gained it in the light of its Master
with watering places for the fortunate servants.
As the dawn rose for the people of certainty.
فأبْصارُناso our eyes وقْفٌdevoted علَىto كلِّevery منْظَرٍsight

So our eyes are devoted to every sight
The armies of heaven defend it
that delights, and it holds what pleases the ears.
Against the lions of Allah and their goal.

And whoever settles in this kingdom seeks thereafter no
Though the task is difficult, it is a refuge
departure, nor does any impulse draw him away from it.
And though the sin is grave, the Lord pardons.

We dwelt with a clan of the Ansar, by whose light
The blessings of Yusuf poured upon us
the horizons shone for those possessed of certainty,
Like copious rain quenching the thirsty.
وغَاباًand a forest لأُسْدِfor the lions اللّهِof God دونَbarring مَرامِهِaccess to it

and in a forest for God's lions; barring access to it,
From his good tidings and gifts emerged
the hosts of the tiered heavens stand in defense.
Rising suns and pouring rains.

And if calamity strikes, it is a refuge from death;
Before his accession, the abundant showers
and if sin terrifies, it intercedes regarding that sin.
Were likened to the fingers on his hand.

And from Yusuf's gifts there overflowed upon us
May your Lord preserve glory for you thus
seas that quench the thirsty ones' burning thirst.
And exalt greatness and nurture talents!

And from his cheerful face and his bounty there appeared to us
O Prince of the Exalted! Without you, tranquility
clouds pouring rain, and suns rising.
Would be unknown to sleepless, tossing eyes.

For before touching his right hand we had never seen
This peninsula would not have rested a while
seas of bounty said to be fingers.
With its homelands lying in ruins.

Behold! Thus let glory's master win it,
Truth would not be known from passions
and lofty attainments be built, or benefactions nurtured.
And the ways would not be paved for the seekers.

O prince of glory, but for you no terror would have receded,
When unbelief raged in the lands
nor would slumbering eyes have known sleep.
And greed incited it to annihilate them,
ولاnor سُكِنَتْwas inhabited هَذِيthis الجَزيرةُpeninsula بُرْهَةًa while

Nor would this peninsula have been inhabited even for a while,
God prepared you to champion His cause
and the homelands would have become empty wastes.

Nor would clear truth have been distinguished from caprice,
Advancing irresistibly like fate
nor would broad paths have appeared to travelers.
With power from God that time does not impede.

And when unbelief raged among its lands,
You marshaled squadrons of fierce lions
and greed drove it to uproot them,
That rush when the summoner stirs them.

God readied you there to uphold His faith,
When they draw the trains of their coats of mail
and proclaim the truth, which cleaves asunder,
Like heavy rain clouds appearing in the sky.

and advance as destiny advances, by a power
The generations were energized and war flamed up,
from God, against which no repeller is ever found.
Shaking this vast plain and its expanses.

And you formed battalions from the lions who guard honor;
You equipped steeds swift as lightning
whenever the caller sounded his summons, they came to him in haste.
Whose charges humble the flashing blades.

When they trailed the hems of their armor into battle,
Dyed with the blood of foes, their coats
as rising full moons trail the clouds,
Are clad with the weave of dark mantles.

the peoples stirred, and the desert burst into flame,
Their blades gleam like the dawn – white,
and every peaceful dweller on this earth was shaken.
Red, yellow, piercing bright.

And you readied white-blazed steeds, standing poised,
Before them is the heat mirage of the sands
whose least the flashing lightning envies.
And the gazelles racing over the arid land.

Well-formed and sleek-coated, they bear, from their enemies' blood,
You armed them with forests of spears
markings, and veils woven from battle dust.
That record events with their nibs.

And one is swift, dawn-like, gray and radiant,
Thus the throngs of unbelief, facing their onslaught
and one rose-red, and another vivid yellow.
Were left like debris scattered by gusting winds,
لدَيْهِنّthey have منْfrom رألِthe young ostrich الرِّمالِof the sands إذاwhen انثَنَتْthey turn

When they turn, they have, from the sands' young ostrich,
Seeking through surrender the regrouping of their remnants
a neck, and from the desert gazelle, sinews.
But reconciliation is impossible when God severs ties!
وثقّفْتَand you straightened منْfrom سُمْرِthe brown الرِّماحِspears ذَوابِلاًslender shafts

And you straightened slender, brown spear-shafts;
Your door is hoped for, your might revered,
with their pens, battles are inscribed upon the foe.
Your aid given freely, your rule prevailing.
فأصْبَحَso became جمْعُthe host الكُفْرِof unbelief دونَbefore نِزالِهاcombat with them

So the host of unbelief, before engaging them, became
Your realm supported, your party conquering,
like dry plants left strewn by tempest winds.
Your sword severing the ways of misguidance.

It hopes through peace to gather its scattered ranks,
May God grant you all that your swords accomplished
but how vain to hope to join what God severs!
Whenever the calamities of time befell.

So your door is sought in hope, and your might is feared;
Who has lineage like yours, even if
your aid is freely given, and your justice widespread.
Their lines of fathers are enumerated?

Your kingdom is victorious, and your party triumphant,
Eyes have seen your full grandeur
and your sword cuts off the noses of error.
Since you appeared at the feast daybreak.

God be with you! How keen your swords are whenever
You stepped forward on the feet of majesty
a bitter stroke of misfortune comes crashing down.
To the one who elevates your abode as God elevates.

And who has a grandfather like yours, or a father,
You revived the rites of the true faith
when the Tubba kings count their forefathers?
Through the helpers of God's cause - thus rites thrive.

The eyes have indeed gazed their fill upon you
Rows of horsemen approached at nightfall
the morning a rising radiance appeared from Eid's bright brow.
Obscuring the sights - stalwart and firm.
برَزْتَyou came forth علىon رجْلِthe foot الجَلالِof majesty الىtoward التيthat which

You came forth on majesty's foot toward that which
When you completed the feast day and its ritual sacrifice,
raises your station as God raises it.
Both settler and nomad were fed.
وأحْيَيْتَand you revived للدّينِfor the faith الحَنيفِupright شَرائِعاًordinances

And you revived ordinances for the upright faith;
You returned to the Abode of the Caliphate and Sublimity
through the champions of God's faith, ordinances are revived.
And those dwellings shone with the light of guidance.

And there had advanced, their splendor dazzling the eyes,
You presented a generous palm for kissing
ranks of horsemen, clad in armor.
From which seekers derive abundant flows.

And when, on Eid, you had fulfilled its rite of sacrifice,
Songs of praise for you circulated
and the approaching supplicant and the contented poor were fed there,
Flowing like breaths within the two houses.
رَجعتَyou returned الىto دارِthe house الخِلافةِof the caliphate والعُلَىand high glory

you returned to the house of the caliphate and high glory,
May glad tidings on feast days gladden you
and those quarters shone with the light of guidance.
With news of victories to follow!

And you offered a generous hand to be kissed,
Reveal to us the bringer of joyful tidings -
from which springs flow forth upon those who seek.
The occasions with him were agonizing for us!

كماas ذاعَspread منْfrom أنفاسِthe breaths دارينَof Darin ذائِعُa spreading fragrance
And praises of you spread through the garden of praise,
So persist as refuge for the faith, protecting its sanctum
as fragrance spreads from the breaths of Darin.
When terrors assail your sons one day.
فيَهْنيكَso may it gladden you فيamong الأعْيادِthe festivals أسْعَدُthe happiest قادِمٍarrival

So may the happiest visitor among the festivals gladden you,
Through you, every unattainable fortress
announcing that victory will follow afterward.
Has been seized, no obstacle blocking your way.
أطلّappeared فحيّاناand greeted us بطَلِّwith the dew سُرورِهof its joy
لقدindeed عذُبَتْwere sweet منْهُfrom it لَدَيْناto us المَواقِعُthe places of falling
It appeared and greeted us with the dew of its joy;
The realm of Rome became spoils
sweet indeed to us has been the fall of its dew.
As you gained mastery over the necks of captives.
فدُمْso remain ملْجَأa refuge للدّينِfor the faith تَحْميguarding ذِمارَهُits inviolable honor
إذاwhen دهَمَتْassailed يوْماًone day بَنيهِits sons المَفازِعُterrors
So remain a refuge for the faith, guarding its inviolable honor,
The world submitted to you and its unity
whenever terrors one day assail its sons.
Was restored through the faith you propagate.
كأنas though بكَwith you قدalready أحْرَزْتَyou have captured كلَّevery ممَنّعٍfortified place
بَعيدٍdistant فلمْso not يمْنَعْهُbarred it دونَكَagainst you مانِعُany defender
It is as though you have already captured every fortified place,
I hope to God as if I see
far away, with no defender keeping it from you.
What God, the Maker, will ordain.

And the realm of the Romans has become plunder, and
shackles hold sway over massive necks.
ودانَتْand submitted لكَto you الدُنياthe world وأصْبَحand became شمْلُهاits fellowship

And the world has submitted to you, and its fellowship has become
soon after division, all-embracing through the faith.
وإنّيand indeed I لأرْجوsurely I hope in اللهَGod حتّىuntil كأنّنيas though I

And indeed I hope in God until it is as though I
see, through trusting expectation, what God will do.
