He invited her to scent the traces of Najd, so
is a love whose memory stirred her hidden longing.
His passion for it smoldered inside her like hidden love.

Do not take her away from frequenting its meadows,
how often she has choked on saliva at hardship's watering place.
For how many times has she glowed with joy in the field of exertion.

Yearning melts her constancy, were it not for tears
that loosen their bonds in the eye sockets and along the cheek.
That dissolve her firmness into her cheeks and neck.

So her fervent longing makes manifest what it makes manifest.

They carried the pleasures of early youth,
which sways them like a pampered, supple woman's swaying.
Inclining with the leaning of blessedness and smoothness.

When the breeze's gentle breath stirs, they fall limp:
When the breeze of zephyr blew gently, they fell
one hand to the heart, another upon the cheek.
A cheek to a heart, the other on a cheek.

After the clouds have erased her landmarks from me?

Maidens sporting in their playgrounds.

Stop: let us lament what we suffer from love,
Let us stop to complain of the passion we encounter
and denounce the day of departure and seek redress.
And prepare for the day of departure, making amends,

And send our tears to the eyelids,
for since then they have worn no kohl but sleeplessness.
For after it, they are not lined except with wakefulness.

We shall ask the east wind's breath about its inhabitants;
We will ask the zephyr about the dwellers,
perhaps the wind's breeze will tell us of Hind.
Perhaps the breeze will inform about India.

Its prosperity and the gathering of the living secured.

And there is no repealing God’s decree in the earth.

lowlands and hills pass its mounts between them,

and the desert's low ground casts it toward the heights.
And it hurls them into the depths of the arid wilderness toward Najd.

You have found, in the unjust world, a victorious supporter,

He revived the exemplars of nobility though they were hidden
and brought forth a guiding radiance from the light of guidance.
And brought forth from the light of guidance what provides guidance.

Lions rending at lions.
فلمّاso when اسْتَفَزّshook الذُّعْرُterror منْكَof you فُؤادَهُhis heart

وحقّقَand understood معْنىthe meaning الفَضْلِof superiority فيin ذلِكَthat الحَدِّedge
When terror of you shook his heart,
When terror provoked its heart from you
and he understood superiority's meaning in that blade's edge,
And substantiated the meaning of superiority in that limit.
وماand not بَرِحَتْceased واللهُand God ناصِرُthe defender دينِهِof His faith

and always—with God defending His faith—
You did not cease, and God is the helper of His religion,
his affairs lay in your hands, to reverse or carry through,
His affairs counter to you and in repulsion.
رَمىhe extended بِيَدِa hand الإذْعانِof submission للسِّلْمِfor peace رَهْبَةًout of fear

he extended a hand of submission for peace, in fear,
It threw with the hand of surrender to peace, frightened,
and addressed you, seeking your favor and begging.
Appealing for your satisfaction and begging grace.
فرُحْمىso pity لحَيٍّfor a tribe لمْnot تُجِرْهُyou sheltered it فإنّهُfor it is
فَريدٌalone وإنْeven though أضْحىit became منَamong القوْمِthe people فيin عَدِّthe count
Then pity a tribe you have not sheltered, for it is
So have mercy on a living soul whose ropes you did not pull
alone, though counted among the people.
For he is unique even if he was among the people in number.
وأصْرَخَand answered for aid نصْرُthe help اللهِof God دعْوَةَthe cry صارخٍof one calling for help

God's help answered the cry of one calling for aid,
He cried out, so God’s victory concealed for him
for whom you traversed the far distance beneath night's darkness.
Under darkness the remoteness of distance.
وبُشْرىand glad tidings لأرْضٍto a land قدindeed سَلَكْتَyou led بأهْلِهاwith its people

منَalong السَّنَنِthe path الأرْضىmost pleasing علىon واضِحِthe clear القَصْدِstraight course
Glad tidings to a land whose people you have led
Good tidings to a land whose people you have led
by the most pleasing path, along the clear road of rectitude.
Among the exemplars, clearly intended.
جمَعْتَyou united بِهاin it الأهْواءَthe inclinations بعْدَafter افْتِراقِهاtheir division
فأصْبَحَso came to be فيهاin it الضِدُّthe opposite يأنَسُat ease بالضِّدِwith the opposite
You united inclinations there after their division,
You united through it disparate passions
so that opposites there grew at ease with opposites.
So opposites became intimate with opposites in it.

This feast offers itself to you, the happiest visitor,
May this holiday lead you, happiest of comers,
coming with mighty victory, as promised.
Who came to you with mighty victory, true to promise.

It traversed the distance in longing and set down its mounts
It folded the distance from yearning and alighted
at your gate, the gate of generosity, among the delegation.
At your door, the door of bounty among the delegation.

In its shade you bestowed upon us every blessing:
So we have delighted in its shade every blessing,
they are rain, beyond reckoning or count.
Which is the rain, beyond enumeration or limit.

A palm of yours overflowed with torrents of generosity:
By it, the radiance of dew overflowed from you as tranquility
it is the sea, never for a moment without its rising tide.
Which is the sea, never ceasing for a time its flow.

Take it: pearls from the sea of my thought,
I picked from the sea of my thoughts, pearls for you
to adorn a throat and be strung into a necklace.
To adorn your neck and string on a necklace.

The caravan of the breeze carries it whenever
The caravan of breeze travels with it when it departs
swift mounts journey at a trot and at a brisk stride.
At the pace of steeds, gently and smoothly.

It rises as an orator across the lands' horizons,
It stands in the horizons of the countries, speaking
expressing my love and telling of my affection.
Translating my love and telling of my affection.
كأنّas though العِراقِيّينَthe Iraqis عنْدَupon سَماعِهاhearing it

As though the Iraqis, upon hearing it,
It is as if the people of Iraq, upon hearing it,
with the people's gathering thronged, were bees upon honey.
And their group has plunged into honey and nectar,
يَقولونَthey say إنْif هبّتْblows منَfrom الَمْدِpraise (text unclear) نفْحَةٌa waft
فليْسَthen there is no لِهذاfor this النّدِّincense فيon الأرْضِearth منْany نِدِّequal
They say, if a waft of [praise] blows,
Say: If a breeze blows from sweetness,
this incense has no equal upon the earth.
Then this dew has no equal in the earth!

May God water a land whose sky brought you forth,
May God water a star whose sky shone you forth
and may a noble master and a servant both be blessed.
And bless a generous master and servant.
