رَوَّعَterrified بَالِيmy mind وَهَاجَand stirred بَلْبَالِيmy anguish
وَسَامَنِيand burdened me with الثَّكْلَbereavement بَعْدَafter إقْبَالِgood fortune
It shook my mind and stirred my anguish,
My mind was troubled and my thoughts were disturbed,
And burdened me with bereavement after good fortune.
And I was afflicted by grief after joy.
ذَخِيرَتِيmy treasure حِينَwhen خَانَنِيbetrayed me زَمَنِيmy times
وَعُدَّتِيand my mainstay فِيin اشْتِدَادِthe intensification of أَهْوَالِterrors
My treasure when my times betrayed me,
My provisions betrayed me when my time turned against me,
And my mainstay when terrors grew fierce.
And my supplies in the midst of terrible tribulations.
حَفَرَتُI dug فِيin دَارِيَmy home الضَّرِيحَthe tomb لَهَاfor her
تَعَلُّلاًseeking solace بِالْمُحَالِin the impossible فِيin الْحَالِthe present moment
I dug her tomb within my home,
I dug a tomb in my house for her,
Seeking solace in the impossible for the moment,
Feigning the impossible at the time.
وَغِبْطَةًand joy تُوهِمُmakes one imagine الْمُقَامَremaining مَعِيwith me
وَكَيْفَand how لِيfor me بَعْدَهَاafter her بِإِمْهَالِwith a reprieve
And a joy that makes her seem to remain with me.
And a coveted illusion of her presence with me,
And how can I have any reprieve after her?
When can I ever stall after her?
سَقَىmay water الْحَيَاthe rain قَبْرَكyour grave الْغَرِيبَforeign وَلاَand not
زَالَcease مُنَاخَاًa resting place لِكلِّfor every هَطَّالِpouring raincloud
May rain water your grave in a foreign land, and may it never
Her lonely grave was watered with life,
Cease to be a resting place for every pouring raincloud.
Remaining a refuge for every outcast.
قّدْindeed كُنْتِyou were مَالِيmy wealth لَمَّاwhen اقْتَضَىdemanded زَمَنِيmy times
ذَهَابَthe loss of مَالِيmy wealth وَكُنْتِand you were آمَالِيmy hopes
You were indeed my wealth when my times demanded
You were my wealth when my time required,
The loss of my wealth, and you were my hopes.
The loss of my money, and you were my hopes.
اَمَّاnow وَقَدْwhile already غَابَhas vanished فِيin تُرَابِthe soil of سَلاَSalé
وَجْهُكِyour face عَنِّيfrom me فَلَسْتُso I am not بِالسَّالِيone who forgets
Now that, in Salé's soil, there has vanished
But now that your face has disappeared into the dust of Sala,
Your face from me, I am not one to forget.
I can no longer question.
وَاللَّهِby God حُزْنِيmy grief لاَnever كَانَbecome بَعْدُhenceforth عَلَىfor
ذَاكَthat الشَّبَابِyouth الْجَدِيدِfresh بِالْبَالِيworn-out
By God, may my grief never, henceforth, for
By God, my sadness was not over
That fresh youth, grow threadbare.
That fresh youth in affliction.
فَانْتَظِرِينِيso wait for me فالشَّوقُfor longing يُقْلِقُنِيunsettles me
وَيَقْتَضِيand demands سُرَعَتِيmy swiftness وَإِعْجَالِيand my haste
So wait for me, for longing makes me restless,
So wait for me, for yearning keeps me awake
And demands my swiftness and my haste.
And prompts my haste and urgency.
وَمَهِّدِيand prepare لِيfor me لَدَيْكِbeside you مُضْطَجَعَاًa resting place
فَعَنْfor, after قَرِيبٍa short time يَكُونُwill be تَرْحَالِيmy departure
And prepare a resting place for me beside you,
And prepare for me a resting place by your side,
For soon will come my departure.
For soon will be my travel.
وَاسْمُكِand your name مَقْلُوبُهُits reversed form يُبَيِّنُmakes clear لِيto me
مَآلَthe outcome of أَمْرِيmy affair فِيin مَعْرِضِthe guise of الْفَالِan omen
And your name, read backward, reveals to me
And your name reversed reveals to me
The end of my course, in the guise of an omen.
The outcome of my affair in the context of fate.
