وإنْand even though كانwas عنْديin my view أنّthat ذلكَthat زُورُfalsehood
Indeed, by a phantom that visits in sleep,
Though you visit me in dreams,
though, in my view, this is a deception,
I know that to be untrue,
لقدْindeed ضِقْتُI was overwhelmed ذرْعاًin endurance بالنّوىby separation بعْدَafter بُعْدِكُمْyour departure
علىdespite أنّنيthat I am للنّائِباتِin the face of calamities صَبورُpatient
I can no longer bear separation since you went away,
I've been sorely tried, so distant from you,
though I am patient in the face of calamities.
Yet I endure misfortunes patiently.
أدافِعُI ward off منْfrom شوْقيmy longing ووجْديand my passion كَتائِباًbattalions
يُزلْزَلُis shaken رضْوَىRadwa عنْدَهاbefore them وثَبيرُand Thabir
I ward off battalions of my longing and passion,
My longing and passion I hold back
before which Radwa and Thabir are shaken;
Though they shake my composure and peace.
سَراباًa mirage إذاwhen ماemphatic particle اللّيلُthe night مدَّspread رِواقَهُits canopy
علىupon ساحةِthe field of الصّبْرِpatience الجَميلِbeautiful تُغيرُthey raid
mirage-like, when night spreads its canopy,
A mirage in the night's expanse
they raid the field of beautiful patience.
Disturbs the beautiful field of patience.
بَرىwasted away جسَديmy body فيكُمْfor you غَرامٌpassion ولوْعَةٌand burning anguish
إذاwhen سكَنَgrew still الليْلُthe night البَهيمُpitch-black تَثورُit flares up
Passion and burning anguish for you have wasted my body;
My body yearns and burns for you
when the pitch-black night grows still, the anguish flares up.
When the night's dark stillness stirs.
فلوْلاand were it not for أنينيmy moaning ماnot اهْتَدىfound its way نحْوَtoward مضْجَعيmy bed
خَيالُكُمُyour phantom باللّيلِby night حينَwhen تَزورُyou visit
But for my moaning, it would not find its way toward my bed—
If not for my dreams guiding me
your phantom, when you visit in the night.
To my bed, your image visiting at night.
ولوْand if شِئْتُI wished فيwithin طيِّthe folds of الكِتابِthe letter لزُرْتُكُمْI would visit you
ولمْand not تدْرِknow عنّيof me أحْرُفٌletters وسُطورُand lines
Were I to wish it, I would visit you within the letter's folds,
If I wished, I could visit you
and neither letters nor lines would know of me.
In script's folds, unknown lines and prose.
تذكّرْتُI recalled عهْداًa time طالَlasted long بعْدَafter انْصِرامِهِits ending
عليْهِover it الأسىsorrow وانجابَand it vanished وهْوَwhile it was قصيرُbrief
I recalled a time: after it ended, long endured
I recalled a past time, long gone,
the sorrow for it, though it had slipped away so soon.
Sorrowful, fleeting, yet still dear.
وقدand indeed طلَعَتْrose للرّاحِfor the wine فيin ظُلُماتِهِits darkness
نُجومٌstars تُواليkeep up حثّهُنّurging them on بُدورُfull moons
And in its darkness, for the wine, there had risen
The breeze raised dark veils
stars that full moons kept urging onward.
As stars appeared, circling, urging.
وهبّand blew نسيمُthe breeze of الوصْلِunion فيin روضَةِthe garden of الرِّضاcontentment
بَليلاًmoist وأكْواسُand cups of السّرورِjoy تَدورُgo round
And the breeze of union blew in the garden of contentment,
The breeze of reunion blew in the garden of joy
moist, while the cups of joy went round.
A night of cups and cheer revolving.
وعهْداًand a time بعيْنِat the Spring of الدّمْعِTears للدّمْعِfor tears بعْدَهُafter it
مَوارِدُwellsprings فيin آماقِناthe corners of our eyes وبُحورُand seas
And a time at Ayn al-Damʿ—the Spring of Tears—after which tears
Another pact the teary eye made
had wellsprings and seas in the corners of our eyes.
Of waters and springs within me.
عُهودُtimes مُنىًwishes غصَّchoked الزّمانُTime بحُسْنهاon their beauty
فغارَso it grew jealous عليْهاof them والزّمانُand Time غَيورُjealous
Seasons of wishes, whose beauty made Time choke;
Joyous pacts, time constricted their beauty,
so it grew jealous of them, and Time is jealous.
So it envied them, time is jealous.
فَهاso here أناI أسْتَقْريI question الرّياحَthe winds إذاwhen سرَتْthey pass by night
ليُخْبِرَنيso he may inform me بالظّاعِنينَof those who departed خَبيرُone who knows
So here I am, questioning the winds when they pass by night,
I question the winds when they blow
so that one who knows may tell me of those who departed.
To inform me of those who roam afar.
وإنْand if خطّpenned وجْديmy passion منْfrom دُموعيmy tears رِسالَةًa letter

علىupon صفْحِthe surface of خدّيmy cheek فالنّسيمُthen the breeze سَفيرُan envoy
And if my passion pens a letter from my tears
If my passion writes a letter
upon the surface of my cheek, then the breeze is its envoy.
With my teardrops, the breeze carries my message.
فَياso, O رحلةَjourney of الصّيْفِsummer التيwhich بجوانِحيwithin my breast
لَهاit has لهَبٌa flame لاnot ينْقَضيcomes to an end وسَعيرُand a blaze
O summer journey, which within my breast
O summer journey that rages in me
has a flame that never dies and a raging blaze!
With endless flames and fires.
أحوِّلُI turn منْكِbecause of you الشّهْرَthe month حوْلاًa year علىfor الوَرىall mankind
وأصْبَحَتِand have become الأيّامُthe days وهْيَand they are شُهورُmonths
Because of you, I turn a month into a year for all mankind,
I turn the month around people
and the days have become months.
And days become months.
وياand O قلْبُheart لاdo not تطْرَحْthrow down سِلاحَكَyour weapon رهْبَةًin fear
فهَلْfor is هيَit إلاanything but أنّةٌa groan وزَفيرُand a sigh
And, O heart, do not throw down your weapon in fear;
O heart, do not surrender your weapons in fear
for what is it but a groan and a sigh?
Are they not snarling and defiant?
جَنَيْتُI brought about النّوىseparation لاnot عنْout of مَلالٍboredom ولاand not قِلىًaversion
فمِثْليso one like me بمَوْصولِof unceasing المَلامِblame جَديرُdeserving
I brought separation upon myself, not out of boredom or aversion;
I have reaped wishes, not out of boredom or fatigue,
so one like me deserves unceasing blame.
One like me deserves boundless blame.
وجرّدْتُand I stripped عنّيfrom myself لِبسَةthe garment of الوصْلِunion طائِعاًwillingly
وكمْand how many شَرِقِhave choked بالماءِon water وهوَthough it is نَميرُpure and sweet
And I willingly stripped myself of the garment of union;
I stripped myself of the garb of union willingly
and how many have choked on water, though it was pure and sweet!
Though it shone with water, a leopard's spots.
أأحْمَدُO Ahmad إنْeven if جلَّgrew great الذيthat which بيafflicts me مِنof الجَوىlove's anguish
وأصبَحْتُand I have become ماnot ليfor me فيin هَواكَlove for you نصيرُa champion
O Ahmad, though the anguish within me has grown great,
Shall I thank time for easing my love?
and I have come to have no champion in loving you,
I am left without aid in passion for you.
فلَسْتُyet I am not منَof اللّطْفِgrace الخَفيّhidden بيائِسٍdespairing
فكمْfor how much منْof بُكاءٍweeping كانَcame about عنْهُfrom it سُرورُjoy
still I do not despair of hidden grace;
I am not deprived of secret kindness
for many a bout of weeping has given rise to joy.
For many tears have brought me joy.
أتانيcame to me كتابٌa letter منْكَfrom you لاno بلْrather حديقَةٌa garden
I sheltered in its shade والهَجْرُwhile estrangement منْكَfrom you هَجيرُnoonday heat
A letter came to me from you—no, rather, a garden,
A letter came from you, no, a garden
in whose shade I sheltered, while your estrangement was noonday heat.
I rested in, though your abandonment roared.
وأرْسَلْتُand I let flow دمْعَtears العينِthe eye حينَwhen قرأتُهاI read it
فمِنْهاso from it أماميbefore me روْضَةٌa garden وغَديرُand a pool
And I let tears flow from my eyes when I read it,
I sent the tear from my eye as I read it
so from it lay before me a garden and a pool.
Before me, a meadow and stream appeared.
تكلّفْتُI forced myself to فيكَfor your sake الصّبْرَpatience والصّبْرُthough patience مُعْوزٌlacking
وهوّنْتُand I made light of فيكَfor your sake الخَطْبَthe ordeal وهْوَthough it was عسيرُdifficult
I forced myself to be patient for your sake, though patience was lacking;
I pretended patience for you though lacking
and I made light of the ordeal for your sake, though it was hard.
And belittled tribulation, though severe.
ولُذْتُand I sought refuge الىin الآمالِhopes وهْيَthough they were سَفاهَةٌfolly
ومِلْتُand I turned الىtoward الأطْماعِdesires وهْيَthough they were غُرورُdelusion
And I sought refuge in hopes, though they were folly,
I delighted in hopes though foolishness
and turned to desires, though they were delusion.
And tired of wishes, vain fancies.
سألْقيI shall cast الىinto أيْديthe hands of الزّمانِTime مَقادَتيmy reins
فيَعْدِلُthen it acts justly فيin أحْكامِهِits judgments ويَجورُand acts unjustly
I shall cast my reins into the hands of Time,
I will leave my reins to the hands of time
and it will be just in its judgments, and unjust.
To judge justly or tyrannize.
وإنّand indeed الذيHe who بالبُعْدِthrough separation أجْرىcarried out قضاءَهُHis decree
علىto جمْعِgathering شمْليmy scattered life كيفَhowever شاءَHe wills قَديرُable
And He who carried out His decree through separation
He who ordained our separation from afar
can bring my scattered life together however He wills.
Could reunite us, Almighty, Wise.
فتُدْرَكُso will be attained آمالٌhopes وتُقْضىand will be fulfilled مآرِبٌwishes
لديّfor me وتُشْفىand will be healed باللّقاءِthrough reunion صُدورُbreasts
Thus hopes will be attained and wishes fulfilled
So hopes are fulfilled, wishes attained
for me, and breasts will be healed through reunion.
Sorrows healed by reunion, at last.
