إنif كُنتَyou are تُنكِرُyou deny ماwhat تُجِنُّconceal ضُلوعيmy ribs
منْof لاعِجٍburning passion فاسْألthen ask شُهودَwitnesses دُموعيmy tears
If you deny what my ribs conceal
Of burning passion, then ask my tears as witnesses.
أعْمَلْتُI employed بعْدَكَafter you بالمُحَصَّبِat al-Muhassab وقْفَتيmy halt
أدْعوI call upon مِنof السُّلْوانِsolace غيْرَnot سَميعِone who hears
I took my stand at al-Muhassab after you,
Calling upon solace, which cannot hear.
لَهْفيmy anguish علَىfor عهْدٍa former time بمُنْعَرِجِat the bend of الحِمىthe sanctuary
مَغْنَىthe abode of السّرورِjoy وأُنْسِيَand my companionship المَجْموعِgathered together
Alas for the days at the bend of the sanctuary,
The abode of joy and my gathered companionship.
قالُواthey said مَتىwhen ظعَنَdeparted الّذينَthose who تخلّفواleft behind
نارَthe fire of الجَوىanguish بفؤادِكَin your heart المَصْدوعِshattered
They said, "When did those depart who left behind
The fire of anguish in your shattered heart?"
فأجَبْتُهُمْthen I answered them شَدّواthey saddled الرّكائِبَthe riding camels مَوْهِناًlate at night
وتحمّلواand they carried away الأقْمارَthe moons تحْتَbeneath هَزيعِa span of night
I answered them: They saddled the riding camels late at night,
And carried the moons away beneath a span of night.
وسَرَوْاand they traveled by night فكانَso became النّوْمُsleep شهْرَthe month of محرَّمٍMuharram ('forbidden')
ومَواطِرُand the showers of الأجْفانِthe eyelids شهْرَthe month of رَبيعِRabi' ('spring')
And traveled by night: sleep became the month of Muharram ('forbidden'),
And the eyelids' showers the month of Rabi' ('spring').
وكَّلُواthey charged بحِفْظِwith guarding العَهْدِthe pledge أيَّwhat a مُراقِبٍwatchman
واسْتَحْفَظواand they entrusted for safekeeping الأسْرارَthe secrets غيْرَnot مُذيعِa divulger
They charged a watchman—what a watchman!—with guarding the pledge,
And entrusted the secrets to one who would not divulge them.
فمَتىso whenever جنَحْتُI inclined الىtoward السُلوِّforgetfulness تَعلُّلاًseeking relief
غلَبَovercame التّطَبُّعُacquired habit شيمَةَthe character of المَطْبوعِone naturally disposed
So whenever I leaned toward forgetfulness, seeking relief,
Acquired habit overcame innate disposition.
ياO مُلْبِسيyou who clothe me ثوْبَthe garment of السَّقامِsickness وتارِكيand who leave me
بيْنَbetween الأُوامِburning thirst وبيْنَand between حَرِّthe heat of ضُلوعيmy ribs
O you who clothe me in the garment of sickness and leave me
Between burning thirst and the heat of my ribs,
عامِلْtreat me بِماwith what عوّدْتَyou have accustomed me to منْof لُطْفٍkindness ومِنْand of
رُحْمَىmercy ولاand do not تَنْظُرlook لسوءِat the evil of صَنيعِconduct
Treat me with the kindness you have accustomed me to, and with
Mercy, and do not regard my ill conduct.
واعْطِفْand show tenderness علَيّto me وجُدْand be generous بأيْسَرِwith the slightest نائِلٍgift
ماwhat قَلّis little يكثُرُbecomes much منْكَfrom you عندَgiven قَنوعيmy contentment
And show me tenderness, and be generous with the slightest gift:
What is little from you becomes much, given my contentment.
أيْقَظْتَyou awakened لمّاwhen نِمْتَyou slept ساكِنَthe dormant زَفْرَتيmy sigh
وحرَمْتَand you denied أجْفانِيmy eyelids لَذيذَthe sweetness of هُجوعِslumber
You awakened my dormant sigh when you slept,
And denied my eyelids the sweetness of slumber.
ووَكَلْتُand I charged عَيْنِيmy eye بالفَراقِدِwith al-Faraqid والسُّهَىand al-Suha
أبْكيكَI weep for you عنْدَat غُروبِهاtheir setting وطُلوعِand rising
And I set my eye to watch al-Faraqid and al-Suha,
I weep for you at their setting and rising.
فالنّجْمُso the star فيin كَبِدِthe heart of السّماءِthe sky مُسامِريmy nighttime companion
والسُّقْمُand sickness فيamid قلَقِthe restlessness of الفِراشِthe bed ضَجيعيmy bedfellow
So the star in the heart of the sky is my companion through the night,
And sickness, amid my restless tossing in bed, is my bedfellow.
جرّدْتُI stripped off ثوْبَthe garment of الصّبْرِpatience فيكَfor you تَولُّهاin love-struck distraction
ولَبِسْتُand I donned ثوْبَthe garment of تدَلُّليmy coquetry وخُضوعيand my submission
I stripped off the garment of patience, distraught with love for you,
And donned the garment of my coquetry and submission.
سلْask نحْوَthe grammar of سائِلِflowing عَبْرَتيmy tear أوor زَفْرَتيmy sigh
يأتيكَit will bring you بالمَخْفوضِwith the lowered (genitive) والمَرْفوعِand the raised (nominative)
Ask the grammar of my flowing tear or my sigh;
It will bring you the lowered (genitive) and the raised (nominative).
واسألْهُand ask it عنْabout وجْدِيmy passion يُجِبْكَit will answer you مُبادِراًpromptly
هَذاthis قِياسٌan inference ليْسَis not بالمَرْفوعِdismissed
And ask it about my passion; it will answer you at once:
"This is an inference, not to be dismissed."
عذَّبْتَنيyou tormented me وأبَحْتَand you exposed جِسْميmy body للضّنَىto wasting sickness
ومَنَعْتَنيand you denied me ماwhat ليْسَis not بالمَمْنوعِforbidden
You tormented me and exposed my body to wasting sickness,
And denied me what is not forbidden.
إنْif كانis ذَنْبيmy sin أنّنيthat I am بكَwith you مُغْرَمٌenamored
كلِفُpassion-stricken الفؤادِat heart فلاتَthen it is not حينَa time for رُجوعِturning back
If my sin is that I am enamored of you,
Passion-stricken at heart, then it is no time to turn back.
