إذاif سافَرَtravels السّلطانُthe sultan نحوَtoward مُنكَّبٍMunakkab
إذا سافَرَ السّلطانُ نحوَ مُنكَّبٍ
ولمْand did not أتّبِعْهُI follow him جاهِداًstriving hard سقَطَfell away الحَرَجْthe blame
ولمْ أتّبِعْهُ جاهِداً سقَطَ الحَرَجْ
If the sultan travels toward Munakkab,
and I do not toil to follow him, I incur no blame.
فمِنْfor among عِقَبٍmountain passes مَنْwhoever ضَلّlost his way فيin شِعْبِهاtheir ravine هَوَىplunged down
فمِنْ عِقَبٍ مَنْ ضَلّ في شِعْبِها هَوَى
ومِنْand among درَجٍsteps مَنْwhoever زَلّslipped فيin ضَنْكِهاtheir narrowness دَرَجْperished
ومِنْ درَجٍ مَنْ زَلّ في ضَنْكِها دَرَجْ
For there are mountain passes—whoever strays in their ravine plunges down—
and steps—whoever slips in their narrow confines perishes.

May he who has constricted the heart through his love for it
grant us relief through his hatred of it.
