إنْif أكُنْI have غيرَكُمanyone other than you نظَرْتُI looked بعَيْنيwith my eye
إنْ أكُنْ غيرَكُم نظَرْتُ بعَيْني
بعْدَكُمْafter you ياO سَوادَpupil ذاكَthat السّوادِthe pupil
بعْدَكُمْ يا سَوادَ ذاكَ السّوادِ
If I have looked with my eye at anyone but you,
If I were other than yours I looked with my eyes
after you, O pupil of that pupil,
After you, O blackness of that blackness
أناI واللهِby God أجعَلُI make الجَفْنَthe eyelid منْهاof it
أنا واللهِ أجعَلُ الجَفْنَ منْها
حُبُساًan endowment دائِماًpermanent لسُكْنىfor the dwelling of السهادِsleeplessness
حُبُساً دائِماً لسُكْنى السهادِ
I, by God, shall make its eyelid
I, by Allah, make of it
a perpetual endowment for sleeplessness to dwell in.
An everlasting prison for the abode of sleep
