إِذَاif أَناI لَمْnot أُوثِرْI prefer هَوَايَmy desire عَلَىover عَزْمِيmy resolve
فَنَفْسِيَthen my soul فِيin طَوْعِيobedience to me وَأَمْرِيَand my affair فِيin حُكْمِيmy control
If I do not favor my desire over my resolve,
If I do not prefer my desire over my determination,
then my soul obeys me, and my affairs are under my control.
My soul is obedient to me, and my matter is under my control.
وَإِنْand if أَنَاI أَرْجَأْتُI postponed الأُمُورَthe affairs إلَىuntil غَدٍtomorrow
طَعَنْتُI stabbed بِغَرْبِwith the edge of الْعَجْزِhelplessness فِيinto ثُغْرَةِthe vulnerable opening of الْحَزْمِresolve
And if I postpone affairs until tomorrow,
And if I postpone matters until tomorrow,
I strike resolve's vulnerable opening with the blade of helplessness.
I have stabbed determination with the lack of resolve in its vulnerable spot.
وَإِنَّand surely أَحَقُّmost deserving الْنَّاسِpeople بِاللَّوْمِof blame لامْرُؤsurely a man

And surely the person most deserving of blame is one
And the most deserving of blame is the man
who loses the path of right guidance knowingly.
Who loses the path of righteousness while he is knowledgeable.
كَتَمْتُI concealed اشْتِيَاقِيmy longing وَالْنُّحُولُand thinness يَنِمُّbetrays بِيme

I concealed my longing, but my gauntness betrays me,
I concealed my longing though the sadness was increasing in me,
as though I had passed concealment from myself to my body.
As if I made concealment inherent in my body.
وَقُلْتُand I said لِجَفْنِيto my eyelid إِنْif دُعِيتَyou are summoned لِعَبْرَةٍfor a tear

And I told my eyelid, "If you are summoned to shed a tear,
And I said to my eyelids, if you are invited to tears,
then oblige with it: a wealthy man's delay in payment is injustice."
Then aid the extended injustice of the unjust one.
وَلِمْand why لاَnot وَقَدْwhen already حَلَّalighted الرِّكَابُthe riding camels بِيَثْرِبٍin Yathrib

And why not, when the caravan has alighted in Yathrib,
Why not, when the riding animals halted in Yathrib
while, against my will, I bear my home's remoteness from it?
And I was brought to the outskirts of the house from it unwillingly.

Groups urged one another toward it and conditioned
Some people whispered to it and plotted,
tamed mounts, speeding on the wings of resolve.
Sneaking with the wings of determination.
وَقَامَand stood خِضَمُّthe vast expanse of الْمَاءِwater دُونَbarring مَرَامِهِمْtheir goal

And the vast sea stood between them and their goal,
And the turbulence of the water stood in their way,
but they heeded neither its terror nor its battering.
But they did not care about any panic or alarm from it.
إِذَاwhenever الْنَّفْسُthe soul أبْدَتْexpressed فِيهِconcerning it ظَنًّاa suspicion بِحَسْمِهِof its cutting short

Whenever the soul suspects that it may cut its course short,
When the soul shows any notion of overcoming it,
longings tell it, "Cast it into the sea."
Yearning says to it: Cast it in the sea.
فَمَاand not كَانَwas إِلاَّexcept أَنْthat أَتَوْاthey reached مَعْهَدَthe abode of الْهُدَىguidance

It was no more than a moment before they reached the abode of guidance,
And it was not long before they came to the abode of guidance
swiftly, like your dozing in the drowsiness of a dream.
And soon, just as you fell asleep in the year of forbearance.
وَفَازواand they triumphed بِمَاthrough what حَازُواthey gained كِرَاماًhonored فَإِنَّمَاfor indeed

And, honored, they triumphed through what they gained, for indeed
And they won what they won honorably, for verily
visiting the best of creation is among the greatest gains.
Visiting the best of creation is the greatest gain.
كَأَنِّيas though I بِقَوْمِيwith my people حِينَwhen حَلُّواthey alighted حِلاَلَهَاits precincts

I seem to see my people when they alighted in its precincts,
It is as if I see my people when they arrived at its plains
their eyes' lids streaming then with tears.
And their eyes at that time lowered to kiss its soil.
يُكِبُّونَthey fall prostrate لِلأَذْقَانِupon their chins فِيin عَرَصَاتِهَاits courtyards
سَلاماًin greeting وَتَقْبيلاًand kissing عَلىupon ذَلِكَthat الرَّسْمِtrace
They fall upon their chins within its courts,
Bowing down to the ground in its expanses,
in greeting and in kisses upon that trace.
Giving greetings and kisses to that symbol.
فَيُعْفَىthen are pardoned عَنِfor الأَوْزَارِthe burdens of sin فِيin ذَلِكَthat الْحِمَىsanctuary

Then burdens of sin are pardoned in that sanctuary,
So sins are pardoned in that sanctuary
and sins are forgiven in that slapping.
And wrongdoings are forgiven in that embrace.
فَلِلَّهِso to God belongs دَرُّthe excellence of الْقَوْمِthe people فِيهَاthere وَقَدْand already غَدَوْاthey became

How excellent those people there, who have become
So praise be to the people therein, and they came
guests at the resting place of the master of Arabs and non-Arabs.
As guests to the abode of the master of the Arabs and non-Arabs.
أَقَامَhe stood لَهُمْfor them حَيّاًalive أَمَاناًas a safeguard مِنَfrom الرَّدَىdestruction

Alive, he stood as their safeguard from destruction,
He gave them safety during his life and protection from harm,
and took the place of rain in the severity of hardship.
And took the place of rain during severe drought.
وَحَلُّواand they alighted بِهِwith him مَيْتاًdead فَكَانَso was قِرَاهُمُtheir hospitable welcome

They came to him after his death, and their welcome was
And though he has passed away, their staying in it
protection for the frightened and safety for the guilty.
Was like guarding against commotion and securing against crime.

A messenger whose praise the Book's decree proclaimed,
A messenger came whom the judgment of the Book praised
and whom God praised for truthfulness and forbearance.
And God commended him for his honesty and forbearance.

Dearer than life and more beneficial than rain,
More beloved than life but better than living,
and a better guide than a star for whoever has lost the way.
And more guiding for one who has lost the way than the stars.

A chief of pure glory in the house of Hashim,
He is the honest, honorable, and noble among the family of Hashim,
possessors of radiant features and lofty noses.
Possessors of courage, nobility, and high status.

يوحونthey whisper فيin غيerror ويعدونand they run فيin إثمsin
He came as a mercy while mankind lay in pitch-black darkness,
He came with mercy while people were in confusion,
whispering in error and running into sin.
Harboring mischief and committing sins.
فصدقso believed منwhoever قادتهled him سَابِقَةُthe prior decree of الْهُدَىguidance

So whoever was led by guidance ordained beforehand believed,
So those whom guidance led aright were honest with him,
and favor aided him in the decree long established.
And good fortune helped him as in earlier times.
وَصَدَّand turned away عَنِfrom الآيَاتِthe signs مَنْwhoever سَبَقَتْhad preceded لَهُfor him

And from the signs turned away the one for whom
And it barred from the signs those for whom
wretchedness had been fixed in fate's earlier, irrevocable decree.
Misery in earlier fate had been destined.
وَأَعْجَزَand he confounded مَنْwhoever أَعْمَىblinded الضَّلاَلُerror يَقِينَهُhis certainty

He confounded those whose certainty error had blinded—
And it frustrated those whose certainty was blinded
a blindness he challenged with his matchless miracles.
By misguidance which challenged his miracles of convincing speech.
فَرَوَّىso he gave drink to لُهَامَthe vast host of الْجَيْشِthe army مِنْهُfrom him بِأَنْمُلٍwith fingers

And when he invoked the moon, it split for his timing,
and half of it came swooping toward his sleeve.
And part of it came forth plummeting to the horizon.

The desert lizard spoke to him, addressing him,
And the lizard of the desert spoke to him, addressing
and questioning him, speaking as one endowed with understanding.
And questioning with the speech of one of wisdom.

Inanimate rock addressed him, speaking,
And the inanimate rock warned him, speaking to him,
and he was warned of the poison within the foreleg.
And cautioned him of the poison in the forearm.

And in his sealing the prophets there is a sign,
And from him there is a sign for the prophets in the seal,
through which we saw the meaning of beginning in the ending.
We saw through it the meaning of the beginning in the end.

And Aminah, contented, did not complain of pregnancy's burden,
And Amina, content with God's decree, was not burdened
nor was she afflicted by it with distress or sorrow.
By its weight, nor troubled by distress or worries.

Until the night parted to reveal the light of his face,
Until the night uncovered the light of his face,
as clouds thin to reveal the radiance of a full moon.
As clouds uncover the brilliance of a perfect moon.
فَخَرَّتْthen fell لَهُbefore him الأَصْنَامُthe idols صَرْعَىstruck down وَزُلْزِلَتْand were shaken

And Kisra's hall—its battlements hastened,
And the palace of Kisra hastened its towering heights
having witnessed what they witnessed, toward collapse.
To destruction, after witnessing what it witnessed.

And a Christian informed that the earth near it
a prophet would arise, pure in father and mother.

The Commander of the Faithful lauded its virtue,
and revived an effaced path for those endowed with learning.
And revived an extinct tradition for the people of knowledge.
وآَثَرَand preferred تَقْوَىreverence for اللَّهِGod مِنْهَاthrough it فَلَمْso not يَكُنْhe was
بِمُشْتَغِلٍdistracted عَنْهَاfrom it بزيرٍby a treble string وَلاَnor بَمِّa bass string
He favored reverence for God through it, and was not
He preferred fearing God on that night, so he was not
distracted from it by treble or bass strings.
Distracted from it by any trade or selling.
تَقِيٌّa pious man حَذَاfollowed حَذْوَthe footsteps of الْخَلاَئِفِthe caliphs وَاقْتَدَىand modeled himself
بِهِمْon them مِثْلَjust as مَاwhat خُطَّwas inscribed الْكِتَابُthe writing عَلَىupon الرَّسْمِthe outline
A pious man, he followed the caliphs' footsteps, modeling himself
He is devout, following the footsteps of the Caliphs, and mimicking them
on them, as writing is traced upon an outline.
Exactly as the Book has outlined.
إِذاwhen هَمَّhe intends أَمْضَىcarries through عَزْمَهُhis resolve وَإِذَاand when سَطَاhe strikes
فَلاَthen no عِدَّةٌnumbers تُغْنِيavail وَلاَعُدَّةٌand no equipment تَحْمِيprotects
When he intends, he carries through his resolve; and when he strikes,
If he is determined to carry out his resolve, then he does so,
no strength of numbers avails, nor any equipment protects.
And if he is rigorous, then no number benefits or protects.
وَإِنْand if جَدَّhe strives يَوْماًone day لَمْnot يَبِتْhe spends the night دُونَshort of غَايَةٍa goal
وَإِنْand if جَادَhe gives generously مَاnot ذُوone with الْعُسْرِhardship يَوْماًever بِمُهْتَمِّworried
If he strives one day, he does not pass the night short of his goal,
And if he exerts effort one day, he does not stop short of his goal,
and if he gives generously, no man in hardship ever worries.
And if he is generous, no difficult day taxes his care.
وَإِنْand if طَلَبَhe seeks الصَّعْبَthe difficult الْمُمَنَّعَinaccessible نَالَهُhe attains it
بمُدْرَكَةِwith reach to الأَقْصَىthe farthest وَمَنْزِلِةِand the abode of الْعُصْمِmountain goats
If he seeks the difficult and inaccessible, he attains it,
And if he seeks the difficult, unattainable, he attains it
with a reach to the farthest bounds and the mountain goats' abode.
With reaching far and the status of protection.
إِذَاwhen مَاever دَجَاgrows dark رَوْعٌterror فَغُرَّةَthen the radiant brow of يُوسُفٍYusuf

When terror grows dark, there is Yusuf's radiant brow:
When terror and the magnificent beauty of Joseph appears,
through it the horizons shine amid grim calamity.
The horizons in that awful event shine with it.
وَإِنْand if زَمَنٌan age يَوْماًone day عَرَتْهُbefalls it زَمَانَةٌinfirmity
فَرَاحَتُهُthen his palm بُرْءُthe cure of الزَّمَانِtime مِنَfrom السُّقْمِsickness
And if one day the age is afflicted by infirmity,
And if one day an era troubles him,
his palm is time's cure from sickness.
Then its comfort is the era's cure from illness.
فَيَاso O نَاصِرَchampion of الإِسْلاَمِIslam دُمْremain فِيin حُلَىthe adornments of الْعُلَىglory
وَجَارُكَand your neighbor فِيin أَمْنٍsecurity وَقُطْرُكَand your land فِيin سِلْمِpeace
So, champion of Islam, remain in the adornments of glory,
So O helper of Islam, remain in the necklaces of loftiness,
with your neighbor secure and your land at peace.
While your neighbor is safe and your land is peaceful.
وَلاَand may not بَرِحَتْcease آثَارُكَyour deeds الْغُرُّradiant تَكْتَسِيbe clothed
بَدَائِعَmarvels مِمَّاfrom what صَاغَfashioned فِيin وَصْفِهَاtheir description نَظْمِيmy verse
May your radiant deeds ever clothe themselves
And the outstanding traces of your virtue do not cease
in marvels fashioned by my verse in their praise.
To don the wonders of what my poetry has portrayed.
وَإِنِّيand indeed I بِنُعْمَاكَof your bounty الَّتِيwhich مَلأَتْfilled يَدِيmy hand
فَأَصْبَحْتُso I became مِنْfrom إِحْسَانِهَاits kindness وَافِرَrich in الْقَسْمِallotted share
And I, whose hand your bounty has filled,
And I, with your favors which have filled my hands,
leaving me richly favored through its kindness,
Have become abundant in shares from its benevolence.
لأَخْلَقُsurely more deserving مِنْthan جَفْنِيmy eyelid الْمُسَهَّدِkept awake بِالْكَرَىof slumber
وَأَلْيَقُand more suited بِالسِّرِّto the secret الْمَصُونِguarded مِنَthan الْكَتْمِconcealment
am worthier of it than my sleepless eyelid is of slumber,
So from my tearful eyes I will create
and fitter for a guarded secret than concealment itself.
What is most befitting for the secret guarded from disclosure.
