أقولُI say ووَعْدُand the promise of الصُبْحِdawn يمْطُلُهُdelays it الدُجىdarkness
الىuntil أنْthat تَبدّىappeared للعُيونِto the eyes مُحيّاهُits face
I say, while darkness delays dawn’s promise,
I say, and the promise of dawn is delayed by darkness
Until its face appeared before the eyes:
Until its morning appears to eyes
كأنّas though الصّباحَthe morning الطّلْقَradiant طِفْلٌa child مجرَّدٌnaked
تلقَفَهُswallowed him الثُعْبانُthe serpent ثمّthen تبنّاهُadopted him
The radiant morning is like a naked child
As if the free morning were a naked child
Whom the serpent swallowed, then adopted.
Snatched by a snake, then adopted
