ساوَرْتُI grappled with أسْوَدَblacker منْthan ظَلامِthe darkness of دُجىًnight
ساوَرْتُ أسْوَدَ منْ ظَلامِ دُجىً
مَنْwhoever نابَهُit afflicted him فإلىthen into الهُمومِsorrows دُفِعْwas driven
مَنْ نابَهُ فإلى الهُمومِ دُفِعْ
I grappled with one blacker than the darkness of night.
I rode through the blackness of darkest night
Whoever it afflicted was driven into sorrow.
Whose fangs push away all worries and plight
أناI لاnot أقولُsay سَطاassailed الصّباحُthe morning بِهupon it
أنا لا أقولُ سَطا الصّباحُ بِه
لَكِنْbut طَغىran rampant ثُعْبانُهُits serpent فرُفِعْso it was raised
لَكِنْ طَغى ثُعْبانُهُ فرُفِعْ
I do not say that morning assailed it,
I do not say the dawn has arisen with ease
But its serpent ran rampant, and so it was raised.
But that its serpent's veil has now been released
