عَلَى الأَوْتَارِ رَائِقَةُ الشَّبَابِ
I choked on my tears when she sang,
I shed a tear when the fair maiden sang
To the strings, lovely in her youth.
Accompanying herself on the strings
وَمَاand not اسْتَعْبَرْتُI wept مِنْfrom طَرَبٍrapture وَلكِنْand yet

يُذَكِّرُنِي الرَّبَابُ هَوَى الرَّبَابِ
And I did not weep from rapture, but
Not from grief was I brought to weep
The rabab reminds me of my love for al-Rabab.
But the lute reminded me of one I love
