قَالَhe said لِيto me وَالدَّمُوعُand the tears تَنْهَلُّpour down سُحْباًin clouds
قَالَ لِي وَالدَّمُوعُ تَنْهَلُّ سُحْباً
فِيin عِرَاصٍexpanses مِنَof الْخُدُودِthe cheeks مُحُولِbarren
فِي عِرَاصٍ مِنَ الْخُدُودِ مُحُولِ
He said to me, while tears poured down in clouds
He said to me while tears flowed down
Upon the barren expanses of cheeks:
In streams on cheeks furrowed and hollow,
بِكَin you مَاwhat بِيin me فَقُلْتُso I said مَوْلاَيَmy lord عَافَاmay He spare
بِكَ مَا بِي فَقُلْتُ مَوْلاَيَ عَافَا
كَyou الْمُعَافِيthe Healer مِنْfrom عَبْرَتِيmy tears وَنُحُولِيand my wasting
كَ الْمُعَافِي مِنْ عَبْرَتِي وَنُحُولِي
“You suffer as I do.” I said, “My lord, may you be spared
"What ails thee?" I said, "May God give thee health
By the Healer from my tears and wasting.
From my weeping and my sorrow!
أَناI جَفْنِيmy eyelid الْقَرِيحُwounded يَرْوِيnarrates عَنon the authority of الأَعْمَشِal-Aʿmash (the bleary-eyed)
أَنا جَفْنِي الْقَرِيحُ يَرْوِي عَن الأَعْمَشِ
وَالْجَفْنُand the eyelid مِنْكَof yours عَنْon the authority of مَكْحُولِMakhul (the kohl-lined)
وَالْجَفْنُ مِنْكَ عَنْ مَكْحُولِ
As for me, my wounded eyelid narrates on the authority of al-Aʿmash,
My eyelids are sore from ceaseless weeping
And your eyelid on the authority of Makhul.”
And my eyes from tears cannot follow."
