He bent the tawny lance with the suppleness of his figure,
He bent his slender, dark ascent,
And from his eyelids unsheathed the sword of his cheek.
And unsheathed from his eyelids the sword of his cheek,
وأقْبَلَand he advanced فيin جَيْشٍan army منَof الحُسْنِbeauty رائِعٍmagnificent
ترَىyou see العَرَبَthe Arabs العَرْباءَpure-blooded منْfrom دونِbeneath بَنْدِهِhis banner
And he advanced in a magnificent army of beauty;
And came forth with an army of dazzling beauty,
You see the pure-blooded Arabs beneath his banner.
You would see the highborn Arab women beyond his bond.
فمِنfor from ثُعَلِThuʿal الزّوْراءِal-Zawra لمحَةُthe flash طَرْفِهِhis gaze
ومنْand from مُضَرِMudar الحَمْراءِthe Red صَفْحَةُthe surface خدِّهِhis cheek
For the flash of his gaze is from Thuʿal al-Zawra,
So from the radiance of his face flashed a glance of his eye,
And the surface of his cheek is from Mudar the Red.
And from the redness of Mudar shone the page of his cheek.
ولاحَتْand appeared لهُto him فيin حوْمَةِthe battlefield القَلْبِthe heart فتْكَةٌa deadly stroke
تعجَّلَhe eagerly sought نصْرَvictory اللهِGod فيهاin it لوَعْدِهِbecause of His promise
And a deadly stroke presented itself to him on the heart's battlefield;
And for him in the battleground of the heart appeared a victory,
He sought swift victory from God there, trusting His promise.
God hastened in it to fulfill His promise to him.
فحكّمَso he made arbiter سيْفَthe sword اللحْظِthe glance فيin عسْكَرِthe army الهَوىlove
فكَمْso how many مُهْجةٍlifeblood مطْلولَةٍshed unavenged فوقَupon خدِّهhis cheek
So he made the sword of his glance arbiter over love's army;
So he wielded the sword of the glance in the army of passion,
And how much lifeblood lay shed unavenged upon his cheek!
How many compressed hearts above his cheek!
وكمand how many منْof فُؤادٍa heart ضاعَwas lost فيin مأزَقthe perilous straits الهَوىlove

And how many a heart was lost in love's perilous straits,
And how many hearts were lost in the strait of passion,
Missing, though it had fought to the utmost of its strength.
Shackled, after exhausting all effort.
وأشْكَلَand was indistinguishable فيهاtherein موْتُهُits death منْfrom حَياتِهِits life
فعُمِّرَso it was granted long life فيunder حُكْمِthe judgment الغَرامِpassion لفَقْدِهِbecause it was missing
And there its death was hard to distinguish from its life,
And in it his death was obscured from his life,
So love's judgment granted it long life because it was missing.
So he lived on in the rule of love for losing him.

My soul as ransom for the Hijazi in beauty! When he names his lineage,
I swear, he of Hijazi beauty, if he belonged,
The heights bow before the might of his glory.
The highest brows bowed to the glory of his splendor.

He smiled, revealing pure pearls from a strand;
He smiled a brilliant pearl smile,
God's handiwork was exquisite in stringing his necklace.
God's work was elegant in stringing his necklace.

His front teeth have revealed the landmarks of Bariq,
His curves revealed striking features,
And his breaths have revealed the breezes of his Najd.
And his breath revealed the breezes of his homeland.

And on his flanks, whenever he sways, appear
And in his twists appeared, when he bent,
The graces of the ban-trees and laurels of the Hijaz.
The features of the youths of Hijaz and its knights.

From beauty's spring he welled forth at a watering place;
From the eye of beauty burst a spring,
Thirst-maddened hearts circle, without reaching his water.
Around which the hearts of the passionate circle without rosary.

Above his buttons shines the moon of night,
The moon of evening appears on his bracelets,
And a ban-tree bough frolics in the folds of his cloak.
And the branch of blossom frolics in the breath of his chest.

And he works his wiles within his forelock's folds, mockingly,
And it flirts during youth, joking,
As a sword struts in the straps of its sheath.
As a sword flirts in its sheath.

If his flanks are restless within his sash,
If his curls disturbed his kerchief,
How often they have troubled the longing lover's heart with his passion!
Then how much more did they disturb a passionate heart!

And if manifest magic has lined his eyelids with kohl,
And if magic openly lined his eyelids,
How often the tormented lover's eye has been kohled by his sleeplessness!
Then how much more did the glance of meaning line them with kohl!

And they said, 'Down on his cheek.' I said, 'No, rather a page'
And they said flirtation, I said no, but a script
On which I drew up for him a covenant of his love.
In which I bound for him a pact of love.

It patterned the surface of his polished cheek and so adorned it,
And he adorned the page of the polished cheek, thereby beautifying it,
As the pattern of its watered steel adorns a sword's flat.
As the sheen adorned the blade of the polished sword.

So, O wearer of a forelock's hair in ascetic guise,
So O you who don the hair of youth devoutly,
To proclaim his creed of abstinence concerning union with me:
Tell me of my connection to his ascetic ways.

I took the road of patience, though it is a desert waste;
I rode the path of patience, and it was a huge wilderness,
God help me against the road's perils and its length!
May God protect me from the injustice of the path and its distance.

Forty terms of estrangement I have endured;
Forty moons of estrangement I fulfilled,
Oh, who will save my patience from reaching its full maturity?
So who can help my patience achieve its greatest extent?

When my tears bear the light rain of a cloud,
When the clouds carried my tears,
The sparks of its firestick water my heart in love.
My heart quenched in passion the falling of its hailstones.
سَقىmay water اللهُGod عهْدَthe time القُرْبِcloseness أفْضَلَthe best ماwhat سَقىHe watered

May God water the days of closeness with the best rain He ever bestowed
May God water the pact of nearness in the best way He waters
On the days of chaste, ʿUdhri love, from His recurring downpours.
The chaste pacts of passion from the direction of His pact.

And a day I snatched despite the talebearers—
And one day despite the slanderers I stole him,
I openly thanked God and praised Him that day.
I declared my gratitude and praise of God openly.

Time's eyelid feigned sleep, deliberately overlooking me,
The eyelid of time slept away from me on purpose,
And sometimes a man attains beyond his aim.
And often one attains beyond his aim.

And the chief of the household entered my home as a visitor,
And the chief of the house visited my house,
As the full moon alights in the house of its good fortune.
As the full moon visited the house of its happiness.

Oh, if only my people knew that I
So O that my people knew that I
Had won, despite my despair, his everlasting paradise.
Attained victory over my despair with the paradise of eternity!
فقبّلْتُso I kissed فيin لَيلِthe night الذّؤابَةِthe forelock وجْهَهُhis face

So I kissed his face in the night of his forelock,
So I kissed his face in the night of youth,
And sought refuge in that light from the night of his rejection.
And sought refuge in that light from the night of his rejection.

And I shared with him red wine the color of my tears,
And I gave him red wine the color of my tears
When they poured molten agate because he was far away.
When it pours molten carnelian from his absence.

And I said to its cupbearer, while obedience to conviviality
And I said to its server and to companionship, obedience!
Ruled the jest and earnestness of conversation:
Manage the jest of speech and its passion.

'Pass it round, for rain has moistened the garden of his cheek,
Serve it, for the cheek was made green by modesty,
And a border of myrtle encircles its rose.'
And the perfume of blossoms encircled his rose.

So he offered it, mixed with his saliva,
So he served it mixed with his saliva,
Though, had I been fair, I would have said, 'With his honey.'
And if I were fair, I would say with his honey.

Then, when the wine's exhilaration appeared in him,
For when pleasure appeared to the one resting in it,
And a north wind of wine swayed his figure,
And the left inclined toward embracing his nape,

He pillowed himself on bundles of fragrant herbs and curled up,
He made the plants his pillow, and bent
Snoring like a child upon his cradle.
To cover the babbling of the child above its cradle.

So I pledged allegiance to chastity's sovereign, and let nothing
So I pledged allegiance to the sultan of chastity, and did not allow
Cross my mind except fidelity to his covenant.
Myself except to fulfill the pact with him.

O father of glory, most holy, treat gently
That passion invaded; they have become its army's plunder.
Souls conquered by a passion that became the plunder of its army.

That protects their last spark of life, like a greeting and its reply.
That would protect their reputation like peace and its reconciliation.

The first master to act unjustly in judging his slave.
The first patron dealing with his servant.
